Xirrus Vs Ubiquiti

Hi everybody and happy new year to all of you. I am a new guy in the forum as well as to the WISP. I am currently performing a research in order to find out if it would be possible to establish a WISP business in my country (Greece). I am currectly evaluating the hardware and i need to know if you have any expirience from a company called Xirrus(www.xirrus.com). Their products are much more expensive than Ubiquiti & Miktorik but they claim to have a much better solution in terms of coverage and throughput. I am waiting for your feedback. Thank you for your time & support.

I think Xirrus solutions are good for indoor networks, not outdoor. So, its not good for WISP's imho :manhappy:

Re: Xirrus Vs Ubiquiti

Just wondering, how much is each indoor base unit?

The last time I checked their units start at $1500 and goes up from there. Basically indoor units good for conferences and concerts where there are throngs of people.

Re: Xirrus Vs Ubiquiti

It looks like an interesting product. The idea of an array of high gain AP modules arranged like spokes of a wheel looks great but I wonder how they work in terms of isolation, etc.

Re: Xirrus Vs Ubiquiti

I have both Xirrus and Ruckus AP's that i use. Basically to use Xirrus you need to have a specialised university degree just to understand the GUI, and they arent cheap.. i paid around $4000 for the Xirrus 16. Mine are outdoor (need a special outdoor cover for them) and do work well.

Ruckus are cheap enough ($700 per AP) and the GUI is the easiest that i have ever used on any equipment. Their PTP's are awesome, but not really cheap at around $2000 for the pair... But i do get 240mbps throughput from them so that is great.

Re: Xirrus Vs Ubiquiti

Xirrus does work very well but they're a solution to a very specific situation. That situation is very dense wifi environments like lecture halls and you require the least amount of equipment to mount.
They don't really fit WISP use very well unless you've got to cover a convention hall or something of the like. It's basically a bunch of mini sectors packed into a single unit. I wouldn't bother with them unless you have a high density situation you can't solve by other means.

Luke, could you please share more detail information about experience with ruckus on ptmp network? Have you ever test it compare to ubiquiti network? How is the penetration with beamforming?
Thanks
