Re: UWC - Chicago - Play By Play

Sorry: I must have missed some clients,
'...joe'. What 'tight-beamwidth' devices
are you describing? Not AirGrid I hope.

NanoBridge, perhaps. But those devices
are intended for longer distances. Dave

Re: UWC - Chicago - Play By Play

Sorry: Could you explain to me 'dave..'
just what makes a NanoBridge-25, which
has about a 6° beamwidth, only an
"intended for longer distances" device??
I can reduce the Tx power to minimal
levels. So for me, the only limiting
factor is the Rx gain. ... Therefore, my
request to be able to step that down as
well.
Sure a NSM5 or worse yet, a NSML5,
listen with some pretty wide ears.
That's why I'd like to get away from
using them, AirSync or not.
Might you be stuck in the thinking
of 10 years ago, where who-the-hell-
could-afford 25dBi antennas (let
alone 5.8GHz radios) except for
those fringe customers where there
was no other choice?? If you were
watching carefully, Ubiquiti pricing
turned that thinking on its ear.
The prices of NBM5-22 & -25 are
down in the range of NSM5. (Even
when adding Sirhc's side signal noise
armor) A 30dBi dish + Rocket price
is pretty reasonable for a business
customer, or even a PowerBridge.
They both have a 5° beam. So why
not use 'em closer in???
Best Regards ... Joe

I may have taken journalism classes in university - then realized there was no money to be made there :manhappy:

I'll take up a collection :mantongue:. everyone who can't go send me $10 to cover airfare next time and I'll keep being the official blogger :manhappy:

Re: UWC - Chicago - Play By Play

6ghz and 10ghz versions of AirFiber would be nice..

They have talked about this setup and they are currently working on it but dont know when its going to be released from what I remember yesterday when I was up there.

Did you watch the making of AirFiber video? UBNT has obviously snatched themselves a talented bunch of engineers. I don't imagine they're sitting around doing nothing after finishing up the first AirFiber design... It'll be exciting to see what new things they come up with!
Today is an average day: Worse than yesterday, but better than tomorrow.

Re: UWC - Chicago - Play By Play

Heh--maybe I am 'stuck in the past...'

Yes: NanoBridge works as a client device.
But it is much bigger and has more wind
loading than any of the other units. And
it has far higher overall gain than is needed
for most nearby clients. So I conclude that
it is 'intended for' longer-distance use.

Can it be used close-in? Sure, but it wouldn't
be my first choice (or my second one), unless
this link had a serious interference problem. In
the 5.8GHz band (now greatly expanded), this
is (so far) seldom an issue. (For new designs,
I'd stay completely away from 2.4GHz.)

I like your strategy of designing for lower rf
pollution and interference. But I also like the
balanced T/R and small size of a NanoStation.
It's also far less finicky to install and aim. For
me, NanoBridge isn't the universal client radio.

Now that I think more about this, my idea of a
great 'universal' client is a panel antenna radio--
something like a trimmed-down PowerBridge. Dave

Re: UWC - Chicago - Play By Play

We will most likely be moving towards a NSM with reflector dish standardization for long range. The NB's really don't get us that much farther in range (2.4Ghz), and most of the time we end up having issues with them and data rates for some reason.

When UBNT gets better filters for thier radio sets, then, we will see some great news IMO. I am happy to see some of these products. And yes, Mhoppes you rock for the commentary. I had to stay local instead of going. A funeral, and other things going on. Of course I am only 2 hours away also. So I planned to go without problems. Figures LOL
Yep, that can happen

I would have liked to see airFiber with more gain. Traditional 24 GHz dishes are larger.
