Description

Part two of our FTTH Active-E deployment in sunny FL. We have added more than 150 subs to the network using the following:

 

- Home Router: Edge Router X - SFP 

- Remote cabinet: Edge Router Infinity (ER-8-XG)

- Data Center (Central Office) EdgeRouter Pro &  EdgeSwitch

- Single Mode fiber from remote cabinet to the residential structured wiring panel

- UniFI AP in LV Room POE from EdgeRouter X

Very nice installation - gotta ask though, why AE and not GPON for this?

eejimm: We wanted to test AE's functionality and decided to build a POD for further testing. The system performed well in trials and decided to continue further R&D.  Since we own the ISP and RoW's we opted for AE on all new builds. We seem to be getting better results pushing a fiber all the way in the home. 

 

Our existing HFC infrastructure will be upgraded using UBNT's GPON technology.

We use CommScope and Corning fiber, singlemode.

Do you have photos of the fiber distribution setup or could you describe the fiber path? From the headend how is the fiber to the subscriber split or does each fiber drop from the equipment go direct to the subscriber?

It's going directly to the sub. This isn't using the UFiber GPON equipment, all active network equipment. This is a pretty impressive build imo.

There are no splits along the fiber path and each port essentially represents a home on the switch. We use Corning opti-taps on the OFP and mapped back at the fiber cabinet.

Interesting so you have a number of homes which have direct fiber drops to them from the cabinet in the field. What's the network layout, as in how many feeds do you have from the central office and how far is the CO from the field point? Is the bottom switch reciving the fiber from the CO then outputting over a single 10gig copper to the other switches?
