Re: EdgeMAX EdgeRouter software version v1.10.0 has been released!

The "Discussed here" links to threads appear to be broken (not linked).

It's good to see (non-beta/hotfix) movement on the EdgeRouters again!

[ Edited ]

For the packet reordering being fixed, there's no instructions on how to bump it back up to using two cores if you followed the 1.9.7 release notes that told you to set system packet-rx-core-num to 1.  Instructions on how to set it back to normal should really be in the release notes.

Either way, instructions below:

@UBNT-afominsmany of the reference links are not in the release post (e.g. "discussed here").

@UBNT-afomins Is this release any different from the one released in beta a week or two ago?

They are identical.  You can check by comparing the SHA256 values, or the version number after 1.10.0. (i.e. for the ER-Lite, 1.10.0.5056246)

After first reboot I got a "Fatal Error: Could not load configuration" after I logged in. I refreshed the page to try logging in again and it went fine.

Is there a configuration conversion that takes place after the upgrade?

I tried to upgrade through the GUI and it failed even after I removed the old image from cli. I was upgrading from 1.9.7 is there not enough room for 2 newer images ?

*** Edit - problem solve.  User error, sorry about that.

@eshudnow You can also just delete it. That will restore all cores.

Re: EdgeMAX EdgeRouter software version v1.10.0 has been released!

It appears that the UDP reordering/packet loss issue is still not completely resolved at least on the EdgeRouter 4. Tested on v1.9.8.5012183.170825.0258 and v1.10.0.5056252.180125.1031

Replication:

1. Have 2 iperf3 servers in separate subnets on separate interfaces on the ER4.

2. Run "iperf3 -s" on the server

3. Run "iperf3 -u -c serveraddress -b 50000K -t 10000" on the client

4. Wait up to 30 seconds and UDP packets will be received out of order on the server:

Accepted connection from CLIENT, port 59196
[ 6] local SERVER port 5201 connected to CLIENT port 39236
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth Jitter Lost/Total Datagrams

[ 6] 1.00-2.00 sec 3.30 MBytes 27.7 Mbits/sec 0.152 ms 2012/4403 (46%)
[ 6] 2.00-3.00 sec 3.29 MBytes 27.6 Mbits/sec 0.131 ms 1993/4372 (46%)

[ 6] 5.00-6.00 sec 3.27 MBytes 27.4 Mbits/sec 0.103 ms 1821/4189 (43%)

[SUM] 0.0-10.1 sec 1 datagrams received out-of-order

Workaround:

Disabling offloading almost immediately resolves the out of order packet problem:

# set system offload ipv6 forwarding disable

# set system offload ipv4 forwarding disable
[edit]
# commit

Luckily the ER4 has enough processing power to handle a basic gigabit internet connection.

Re: EdgeMAX EdgeRouter software version v1.10.0 has been released!

Random question, how does the new set service dhcp-server static-arp feature work, I presume an admin would program static ip to mac-addresses, and only those hosts would be allowed on that subnet or is there more to it?

also.. the feature seems kind of lacking.. like... why would you want to do this over say DAI or ip source guard?  Unless I am thinking about the feature the wrong way?

Please elaborate, the only details I see that are similar to this are on PFSense which would seem to indicate the above.

Thank you for your time!  Very Appreciated.

Re: EdgeMAX EdgeRouter software version v1.10.0 has been released!

@UBNT-afomins

When add more than 2 LB groups(ex:3)  always get unable to allocate new table.

Also when will be available more than 8 interfaces per LB group.

thanks

I had to remove all "Discussed here" links otherwise I was not able to make blog post because it exceedes 20K char limit. I will put back those links as soon as web support team fixes 20K char limit.

I put missing instructions in relase notes:

configure
delete system packet-rx-core-num
commit
save

No, it is the same 1.10.0 that was posted on Beta forum last week

Yes, it is stil wheezy

There's no config conversion when upgrading from 1.9.7 to 1.10.0

  1. In which browser did use observe "Fatal Error: Could not load configuration" error.
  2. Was it one-time occurrence?

@tnostedt
> I tried to upgrade through the GUI and it failed even after I removed the old image from cli.

  1. What's your ER model?
  2. Please check free space in CLI - "df -h"
  3. Did upgrade from CLI work?

Please try running client with "-l 1460" argument which will limit UDP packet size to 1460 bytes (iperf3 send 8K byte packets by default and this causes packet fragmentation)

@XanALaOM00
> how does the new set service dhcp-server static-arp feature work
If "static-arp" is enabled then DHCP server will write "IP->MAC" binding to APR table when lease is allocated
and remove it from ARP table when lease is freed

@calvarez

I'm able to create >3 LB groups wihtout any problems.

  1. What's your ER model?
  2. Please post LB configuration

> Also when will be available more than 8 interfaces per LB group.
I wonder if there is a real usecase when 8 interfaces is not enough for load-balancing?

Upgraded ER-X from v1.9.7-hotfix1: everything looks fine. Performance appears slightly better...

Thanks for the stable release!

Re: EdgeMAX EdgeRouter software version v1.10.0 has been released!

Upgraded ER-5 at home last night.  Subjectively, it feels more performant.  Got good scores on bandwidth tests too.

I'm looking forward to upgrading the ER-Pros at work.  Waiting for somebody to chime in on ipsec VPN (point-to-point) performance or issues.  Anyone?

Keep up the great work Ubiquiti ER-Pro team.  Squeeze everything you can out of those Cavium chipsets please!

Re: EdgeMAX EdgeRouter software version v1.10.0 has been released!

An occasional out-of-order packet is not indicative of any problem, and is not unexpected.  Your results show less than 0.000034%  over 15 seconds which is not even close to being considered an issue.  If I did my arithmetic correctly only two datagrams out of over 60,000 were delivered out of order.

You can't expect 0% loss and 100% in-order delivery with UDP.  Any service that has such a guaranteed requirement should use TCP which does provide such guarantees.  Your two re-ordered packets could have occurred at either endpoint just as easily as at the router itself.

UDP is best-effort delivery and is sometimes described as 'unreliable data protocol' for that reason (No that is not the proper definition Man Wink )

The issue here was with un unusual number of packets getting re-ordered which impacted services dependent upon semi-reliable delivery of UDP.  Very minor loss and/or reordering is normal and should not be a problem with such services.
