Re: EdgeMax rescue kit (now you can reinstall EdgeOS from scratch)

I got an issue when I tries to boot it up via serial.

I connect to the serial interface via putty and connect the cable, but I get nothing.

Am I doing it wrong?

Re: EdgeMax rescue kit (now you can reinstall EdgeOS from scratch)

Check you have the right serial device and baud rate (note it is not 9600 as per most other things, it is in fact 115200) and that you have flow control turned off.

Failing that your serial adapter or cable may be dodgy.

Putty should work but if not it might be worth trying TeraTerm2

FWIW I use PuTTY all the time for serial on EdgeOS without issues.

I'm not sure what you are talking about, but minicom is the best terminal emulator in the world. (;

Re: EdgeMax rescue kit (now you can reinstall EdgeOS from scratch)

I'm using the settings the userguide says:

Baud: 115200

Data bits: 8

Stop bits: 1

Flow control: none

Parity: none

I connect it to the console and plug in the power, two green leds on the chip lights up (took the case of).
But nothing happens, jusy an empty putty terminal

Re: EdgeMax rescue kit (now you can reinstall EdgeOS from scratch)

Tired that, with no results.

Also tried the other termnals you guys where talking about, they didn't make a difference.

I'm beginnnig to suspect there's something more that's broken on it

It's probably your cable. You're not the first to report some cables are crap and don't work. Man Happy

I've started using this more and more as usb keys started failing in edgerouters... are there known broken batches of those factory installed USB storage devices ?

I too wonder if the system is writing to the flash drive too frequently?

Still think Ubiquiti should invest in a larger heatsink for the unit too.

I believe it has been like that since day dot. It is never written to flash, a reboot clears all logs.

Re: EdgeMax rescue kit (now you can reinstall EdgeOS from scratch)

[ Edited ]

Does somebody have a dd image dump of a usb flash drive for an ER-POE available for me ?

Problem is that my ser-con of the ER-POE only gives gibberish, when I plug my ser con cable into my er-8, it works fine.

So with that problem I am able to use/apply the rescue kit, cont access the console.

Ordered a new flash drive, now need an image so I can dd it back to the new flash drive.

Prefered would be a new image install, but I am able to alter config on a PC if needed.

Thanks in advance.

@fromport - I can send you the image from my ERL with a factory v1.5.0 image (no config) if you think it'll help. If you need the full compressed image of the whole drive in a different format, let me know. Please PM me your email address?

Re: EdgeMax rescue kit (now you can reinstall EdgeOS from scratch)

If you look at the ERK source you'll realise that you can actually perform the same actions on any Linux box provided it has a spare USB port, and a couple of tools installed (mke2fs and fdisk or some other partitioning tool most notably).

You can easily run the commands manually to achieve the same effect as the ERK on a brand new usb stick. I've done this with great success on a couple of occasions before (and once using an ER8 as said Linux box because it was all I had handy at the time Man Tongue).

Of more concern is why the serial console doesn't work on your ERL, especially if you have proven your cable/etc to be good by successfully using the serial console on an ER8... It may be that your device is dead for reasons unrelated to the flash.
