Re: SQUASHFS error...

If you've had that happen more than once now chances are the issue is the onboard flash (which is actually an internal usb stick).

If the device is in warranty I suggest contacting support for warranty, else I have personally had success replacing the internal usb stick on an out of warranty device (the biggest issue is finding a sufficiently small usb stick that physically fits).

Re: SQUASHFS error...

Im also getting this error from time to time. Have checked memory with mtest, and it did not fail.

And I have removed the flash and tested it, and found no problems.(The filesystem failes after reboot, not after any power rrelate issues or other shutdowns)

This really bothers me, and would really like to find the problem causing this.

How did you test it? I've found on devices that are exhibiting issues they usually fail just reading the device block by block, for example:

sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=1M

Will read the entire contents of the flash. Once it completes (assuming it didn't error out half way through) check show log or dmesg to see if any errors about failures reading sda are logged.

dd: /dev/sda: Input/output error

I have teste both with

sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=1M

and with badblock, both without error.

Both test run on a raspberry-pi

Hmm, sounds like the flash is good then. No errors in show log / dmesg either?

Out of curiosity what does this show:

md5sum /root.dev/squashfs.img ; cat /root.dev/squashfs.img.md5

You can actually run the dd test on a live device too which would test the whole system, if it fails in the ERL but not in an RPI perhaps there's an issue with the usb interface on the ERL?

Re: SQUASHFS error...

Will test the md5 when I get home.

since the ERL will not boot it is quite hard to test this in the ERL

Re: SQUASHFS error...

Ah yeah fair enough... Do it on the RPi then I guess.

Re: SQUASHFS error...

Hi,
Thx. for help,  im dont have soo much idea of linux but im also try it.

euphoria@dellmini:~$ md5sum /media/euphoria/620bdd9d-3e17-4d0a-afc6-b9efa45651e4/squashfs.img

d0724bf68965bfb499bd4cfb93cbb4eb
euphoria@dellmini:~$

this im do it from im small dell pc with lubuntu 14.04 The long number is the name of the folder where lubuntu mount the usb drive.

but why from clean install, 1 month work fine, shutdown from the console and when start the file are corrupt?

Thx. for help, im try the other usb memory test.

Re: SQUASHFS error...

Looks like the squashfs image is definitely corrupt.

A quick recovery would be to just copy the squashfs.tmp file from the extracted 1.4.1 tarball (which should have a md5 of d0724bf68965bfb499bd4cfb93cbb4eb) and copy it over the top of the corrupt squashfs.img.

Why it happened in the first place (especially considering squashfs.img is never written to except during a firmware upgrade) is another story, silent data corruption from failing flash sounds like the most likely cause to me.

Re: SQUASHFS error...

[ Edited ]

Heres the output:

md5sum squashfs.img ; cat squashfs.img.md5
7c37b86ee95e72ace31bec55d313301f squashfs.img
d0724bf68965bfb499bd4cfb93cbb4eb

So looks like md5 has changed, why I do not understand....

The files has not been edited either:

I've never seen an EdgeRouter 8 or 8 Pro experience this issue. The flash on those devices is far more reliable thaaan the USB stick storage used in the ERL and ER-PoE's.

Re: SQUASHFS error...

Under warranty? This is not normal behaviour for an ER8Pro (I haven't seen this occur on an ER8Pro ever, only ERL's), so I would be looking at getting a replacement ASAP.
