Dynamic DNS problem edge router lite.

[ Edited ]

Hi all, I'm new to the Edgerouter and relatively inexperienced when it comes to CLI router programming ( Luddite status ).

I can't seem to get dynamic DNS working on my ER lite.

Settings as follows.  Eth 1 is the WAN interface running PPPOE to dumb modem (modem is 192.168.10.1).

Dynamic DNS is tested and works perfectly on my old TP link modem/router.

CLI comands entered for dynamic dns as follows as per Ubiquiti Wiki example.  Router upgraded to latest Firmware version 1.4.1

eth 0 is 192.178.0.0/24 eth 2 192.168.2.0/24 dumb modem is 192.168.10.1  Web browsing etc works OK.

Service provider is dyndns.com

set service dns dynamic interface eth1 service dyndns host-name xxxx.dyndns.org (xxxx substituted)

set service dns dynamic interface eth1 service dyndns login xxxx

set service dns dynamic interface eth1 service dyndns password xxxx

Commit and saved.

Settings look OK in the config but running a status check shows the dyndns not registered. (nterface : eth1 [ Currently no IP address ])

Have I missed something or is there a problem with dynamic dns and 1.4.1??

Thanks in advance

Phil

OK thanks guys, All working nicely now.

I did notice a mention to pppoe in another thread but the thread ended without resolution.

The correct commands for pppoe in my case were...

configure
set service dns dynamic interface pppoe0 service dyndns host-name xxxx.dyndns.org
set service dns dynamic interface pppoe0 service dyndns login xxxxxx
set service dns dynamic interface pppoe0 service dyndns password xxxxxx
commit
save
exit

The Wiki could do with an update to include a pppoe example and clarify the example shown.

Re: Dynamic DNS problem edge router lite.

I've never used PPPOE, but I've seen enough replys to know that eth1 won't be the right interface.  It'll be something related to the PPPOE.

After you get to the point of:

set service dns dynamic interface

type ? to see possible interfaces.

Hope that helps.

Re: Dynamic DNS problem edge router lite.

Re: Dynamic DNS problem edge router lite.

Looks like dyndns is getting out of the free accounts business at the end of April so you might want to go looking for a new service, afraid.org was suggested as being good.

Re: Dynamic DNS problem edge router lite.

I got the same problem : on two edgemax routers configured to use PPPOE over a DSL modem, the UI page shows no IP on that link, even if the internet works perfectly.

I configured the dyndns dynamic DNS stuff, and it fails because, well, the ethernet link does not have an IP. Nothing to update.

Any idea ?

Marc, if you look back a couple of posts, I have shown the correct commands necessary to set up dyndns on pppoe in my case. Make sure that the id of your wan port is specified and not eth1/2/3. In my case the problem was using eth1 as my Wan port (which it was) but that port needed to be specified as pppoe0 and not eth1. Might also be worth making sure you have the latest version Firmware (1.4.1), I seem to remember reading that there have been some changes to DDNS between versions.

the commands again

configure
set service dns dynamic interface pppoe0 service dyndns host-name xxxx.dyndns.org
set service dns dynamic interface pppoe0 service dyndns login xxxxxx
set service dns dynamic interface pppoe0 service dyndns password xxxxxx
commit
save
exit
