I have tried 3 approaches:
1) imgusb tool in Windows
2) dd from OSX
3) router <- Ethernet Cable -> Windows PC (running the tftp-server from post #1 in this thread + "babyftp"-server). No DHCP, static ip's
I bougt 2 new USB sticks today, tried TFTP like 10 Times. Router randomly crashes with the "unable to handle kernel paging request"

I received the replacement SanDisk Cruzer Fit USB Flash Drives 8GB today from SanDisk. The code on the back of this package is SDCZ33-008G-A46, the code on the ones I returned to SanDisk were SDCZ33-008G-B35. I used the rescue kit on one of the replacement drives and they function as they should with the original boot environment settings.Product codes are:
Product Code for replacement drives:
Product Code for drives that did not work:
Product Coe for original drive that I purchased 2 years ago that also worked:
Hope this is helpful. Also my correspondence from SanDisk states that the Cruzer Fit has been discontinued.

Thanks for the information. Here is what I tried and what worked:
- SanDisk Cruzer Micro 4GB (SDCZ6-4096RB): Worked fine, but could not close the case because the drive was blocking the screw hole.
- SanDisk Cruzer Fit 8GB (SDCZ33-008G-B35): Router did not boot, similar to others who tried the exact same model.
- SanDisk Cruzer 8GB (SDCZ36-008G): Worked fine
I found the post on hilo90mhz after two of my friend's routers stopped working, and decided to replace the flash drive in my ER-Lite before it went bad. Thanks to all, 2 more routers are fixed, and 1 is less likely to break anytime soon.

I have found if you have issues with a memory stick, try a low level format in a PC first, but don't create any partitions.
Then put stick back in and attempt it again.
As I had an issue whereby a stick I used had the preloaded image dumped on it already and that someone explaoded after upgrading from 1.8.0 RC1 to RTM.
Tried the recovery and reinstall option and it errored. Took stick out, low level format, insert again, and wham it worked!

For those who have problems with the EMRK script, here are ERLite-3 and ERPoe-5 dd images I've created from default un-modified firmware. Images are from 2GB USB stick, so you may want to re-size the 2nd partition for bigger sticks after the install.

For the benefit of those who doesn't have a console cable like myself, below is my Recovery Method of ERL's USB Flash Drive using Mac OS.
1) Format the USB Flash Drive using "Disk Utility"
2) Download a copy of DD image from https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7VpQSoXqrGFYkdGQTdLRnNYRjg/view?usp=sharing
3) Follow the instructions stated from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx using "Terminal"
4) After successful restoration of the DD image, re-install the USB Flash Drive to ERL and it should boot-up with firmware 1.4.0.
5) Performing a hard reset as a precaution before firmware updates or restoration of your config backup file.
Hope this helps...
THANK YOU... I was given the same runaround and thanks to that 1.4 image - I was able to extract those 2 partitions from it and reapply them to the original USB.
Updated to 1.8 and restored my settings, and all working. WOOOOOOT
thank you x 1000

I have followed the instructions here to recover my ERL from a failed USB drive. It has all gone well and the router boots and from the console I can see that its up and has a minimal config using Ip 192.168.1.1. The problem i have is that I can not browse or SSH or ping the router. from the console I can not ping the remote IP or the router IP, yet on both my laptop and the router each IP is listed in the arp table.
What am I missing. Shold i not just be able to browse to 192.168.1.1 from 192.168.1.10?

thanks for the reply, by manual, do you mean this topic, or is there a manual for the recovery that I am not aware of?
if it's this topic, page 3 seems to cover problems connecting to the console, which is not the issue I have. I have done the recovery using the console and the router has booted up fine, I just can't access it via browser to configure it. I also can't ssh to it.
From the console, I have tried putting a different ip on on eth1 or eth2 and tried connecting to it on those ports and I still get no responce.
If there is a manual for the recovery, that I have not found could you point me in the right direction please?

Ok, getting further.
I have found that if i install the 1.6 image i ca log on and it all works fine.
If i install the 1.7 image it works fine and i can login and upload my saved config.
I did notice that on the settings panel there is an error.
i can reboot the system and it all comes back and works.
Does anyone know what causes the error?
I then upgrade to 1.8 and again can not browse or ssh to the ip address. I can log n via the consile and the configuration looks to still be there.
Has anyone else recovered a ERL to version 1.8 and been able to browse to it?

@BranoB Thanks so much for these files. I was able to get my ERL back up and running after having the USB stick give up on me. I simply copied the image (v1.8.0) to my USB stick ( Kingston Data Traveler SE 9 (DTSE9G2/64GBET)) using imageusb by PassMark software and loaded up my saved config file and I'm good to go.
