EdgeMax vs ToughSwitch

Are there any major performance differences between the ToughSwitch POE and the EdgeMax Lite?  I'm designing an installation where it would be nice to have a EdgeMax, but not mandatory, so I would definitely go with one or the other if there is a major performance/latency difference.

Re: EdgeMax vs ToughSwitch

Those are 2 completely different devices/products...

ToughSwitch POE is a Switch http://www.ubnt.com/downloads/datasheets/toughswitch/TOUGHSwitch_PoE_DS.pdf

EdgeMax Lite is a Router http://www.ubnt.com/downloads/datasheets/edgemax/EdgeRouter_Lite_DS.pdf

Switch != Router

Re: EdgeMax vs ToughSwitch

I use both. At sites with lots of equipment I use a THOUGHswitch PRO 8 port and an EdgeMax Lite. At smaller sites I use only an EdgeMax PoE....

Re: EdgeMax vs ToughSwitch

I completely understand the differences.  I'm thinking I might use the router for traffic shaping, but I could do it somewhere else so I'd rather use the switch if there's a big difference.

If you are looking to bridge the ports on the ERL to use it as a switch you will take a huge loss in performance.  I've seen it shown/discussed as possibly being reduced to as little as 100mbps.

Re: EdgeMax vs ToughSwitch

Wow!  That's a huge reduction.

I'm glad I asked.  I almost went with the edgerouter lite without asking.

Re: EdgeMax vs ToughSwitch

If you are only looking at layer 2 switching (dumb switch) for your reason to bridge, you can get a gigibit 5 port dumb switch for about $25.00. Idea

Re: EdgeMax vs ToughSwitch

Thanks a lot for the advice.  Would you mind giving me a link to the one you're thinking of.  Otherwise, I'll do some shopping around.

Looking at them again today, I guess the one I was thinking of was only 10/100 (the first one listed here).  The third one in this list is 10/100/1000 and is only $54.  I'm sure a little looking around will yield better pricing.  I like this company.  They are local to my work and I've dealt with them for 20ish years.  It was my sales rep here who turned me onto Ubiquiti in the first place.

Sometimes lowest price isn't the best deal.  There's also something to be said for having a rep that you can walk in and punch in the face.  Just kidding.  My rep's a great guy and I throughly enjoy doing business with him.

EDIT:  Oops.  Here's the link.

I'll look forward to hearing about it.  Send me a PM with a link when you start it if you remember.
