EdgeRouter Pro - bgp community problems

[ Edited ]

I have spend several hours trying to get this router to work, but it seems like there is some kind of a bug when I want to set a community to a 32-bit ASN.

The router did complain about my community but they are set in the conf.

Please see the full configuration here: http://pastebin.com/aLNug2gj

It's in the configuratin of route maps linke this:

route-map bgp-redist {
        description "Own summaries"
        rule 2 {
            action permit
            match {
                ip {
                    address {
                        prefix-list redist-summ
                    }
                }
            }
            set {
                community 206574:3200
            }
        }

As the print of communities shows, the set community with a 32-bit ASN dosen't take affect:

rp@r0# sudo vtysh -c "sh run" | grep comm
ip community-list 101 permit 206574:800
ip community-list 101 permit 206574:3200
 match community 101
 match community 101

Any suggestions? And why is it not working?

We are normaly running BGP on Cisco ASR but this setup is for a customer and we don't understand why this isn't working when it does on most other vendors.

I hope to here from you guys soon.

Cheers

Re: EdgeRouter Pro - bgp community problems

You are right, there seems to be a bug that does not allow to set 32bit AS name in route-map community.

16bit AS name in community names succeeds (less than 65535):

root@walter# set policy route-map bgp-redist rule 2 set community 65534:3200
[edit]
root@walter# commit
[edit]
root@walter# imish -e "s ru"|grep comm
 set community 65534:3200
[edit]

Bug 32bit fails (greater than 65535):

root@walter# set policy route-map bgp-redist rule 2 set community 65537:3200
[edit]
root@walter# commit
[ policy route-map bgp-redist rule 2 set community 65537:3200 ]
% Invalid argument value

[edit]
root@walter# imish -e "s ru"|grep comm
 set community 65534:3200
[edit]

I will create a bug ticket for this issue.

Re: EdgeRouter Pro - bgp community problems

Thank you for looking into this issue and creating a buck ticket.

Is it possible to patch the router before Ubnt is releasing a new firmware version?

Do we have an ETA on this fix? About to purchase an ER Infinity but need to know this works before doing so.

Re: EdgeRouter Pro - bgp community problems

@ron9

They're currently in beta.2 (the second beta release, after a round of alpha releases) so I suspect close.

For what it's worth, they have referenced this thread in the bugfix for this in this latest beta.2 release:

  • [BGP] - Add support for BGP extended community that allows setting 4-byte AS numbers (set policy route-map xxx rule 42 set extcommunity rt 1234567:3200). Discussed here

You need to sign up for beta access but it's free and easy and you should then be able to access the betas here if you are interested:

Totally understandable.  I don't think it'll be a lot longer based on my past experiences with betas, but I'm not in the know  Man Happy

Re: EdgeRouter Pro - bgp community problems

Shouldn’t you be implementing RFC 8092 to properly support networks operating with a 32-bit ASN?
