EdgeRouter X acts as switch during boot

During my testing I set the lease time to 42 seconds. I did several "reboot now" on the EdgeRouter X as well. During a reboot cycle of the ERX the client had to renew the lease due to the timeout setting. The client got a DHCP reply from the uplink for ERX!

How can that be? Is the ERX configured to act as a switch on all ethN ports until the bootup scripts configure the ERX as described in /config/config.boot? If so, how can I prevent that?

Imagine what would happen if the ERX has the usual "long" lease time. If it gets rebooted and a client happens to renew the least while the ERX is still in the middle of booting, I think the client will have broken/unusual network settings. And these bad settings remain until either the client is rebooted, or its network is restarted, or the lease expires.

Does that make sense?

Re: EdgeRouter X acts as switch during boot

Yeah this is related to an issue in the bootloader and we have a fix in the form of a bootloader update (not a normal system upgrade since it is not part of the system software). This is being tested now and I can PM you more information if you want to give it a try.

Re: EdgeRouter X acts as switch during boot

Thanks. If it is safe to update the bootloader I want to use that fixed version. What else was changed?

Re: EdgeRouter X acts as switch during boot

Yeah as mentioned let me know if you want to try the fix and I can PM you more information. This is a bootloader update so there's some inherent risk (however low it is), but two community members have tried it and reported that the fix is working for them.

Re: EdgeRouter X acts as switch during boot

Since applying the fix I have rebooted a few times just to test, I haven't pulled a dhcp from the cable modem directly since so it appears to be working.

Thanks!

Re: EdgeRouter X acts as switch during boot

@UBNT-ancheng, i also do not see the dhcp offering anymore on the affected port, that was patched.

I too would like the fix.  Sorry for posting but I'm too young for PM permission. (I'm guessing.)

Re: EdgeRouter X acts as switch during boot

Is this going to eventually appear as a part of a firmware upgrade? Or?

What about newly manufactured units? Will it have the fix apaplied?
