Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

[ Edited ]

Hi, just got this router. My internet connection is 240 download and when I directly connect to my cable modem I get a solid 240 mbps. When I use this router I am anywhere between 80 and 120 mbps. I can't get any higher speeds. That's really disappointing. Is that just the max this device can handle?

I just goit it out of the box, plugged it in and ran the basic configuration that's it.

Here's my config. Thanks!

oh ps I've updated to the last firmware.

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

I recall ER-X is only slightly slower than the ER-Lite which can handle 1 gig throughput. So it can handle your 240mbit internet connection.

Could be configuration issue or maybe bad ethernet cable.

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

Try this - set system offload hwnat enable
Then check - show ubnt offload

[ Edited ]

Here are speeds results from my recent ER-X test on 1.9.7 ... as mentioned, try enabling hwnat and re-test.

Also, is your modem in bridge mode? If you're behind NAT then the speeds may not be completely under your control. Make sure you get public IP on ER-X WAN interface.

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

Thanks for the suggestions! I get this:

admin@ubnt:~$ set system offload hwnat enable
Invalid command
admin@ubnt:~$ show ubnt offload
IPSec offload module: not loaded

HWNAT offload module: not loaded

Traffic Analysis :
  export : disabled
  dpi : disabled
    version : 1.302

Did the same through the GUI which worked and now:

IPSec offload module: not loaded

HWNAT offload module: loaded

Traffic Analysis :
  export : disabled
  dpi : disabled
    version : 1.302

But same result, 120 mbps absolute max on speedtest.net.

eth0 has the public IP, I removed that cable plugged it in my laptop and I get 240 mbps so cable is fine. Everything shows 1000/full as well. Cable directly into the edgerouter again gives me 120 mbps as does wifi.

I have no clue anymore as why it can't go further. CPU load is like 15%. If I can't get it to work I'll sent it back for a replacement unit or other type.

Thanks!

Did you reboot after enabling offload? If not do it...

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

You have to switch to configure mode first

admin@ubnt:~$ configure

admin@ubnt:~# set system offload hwnat enable
admin@ubnt:~# commit; save; exit

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

Are you testing your speeds from wired PC or wireless PC? Make sure you test from wired PC? If the PC has both wired and wireless disable wireless for the test to be sure.

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

So I've restarted the router but no result. It's max sticks to 120 mbps but it fluctuates between 70 and that.

I'm testing both wireless and wired. Without the Edgerouter I get 240 mbps even wireless on my phone (through DAP-2695 5 ghz) but wired as well np.

I've ruled out cabling it's not that. Everything is gigabit connected. It must be faulty hardware perhaps I'm not sure.

Thanks for the help so far guys I appriciate it. I will do some more testing tonight with different cables/ports to be absolute sure.

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

Did you manage to sort out this problem and what did you do?

I am having the exact same problem.

I'm afraid not I'm still stuck at 120 mbps.

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

@martijnk79 - Did you go into "configure" mode before using the set command? I see someone above mentioned that you have to be in the configure mode prior to issuing the command, but you didn't follow up after it. You should be able to enable hwnat without any errors.

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

hwnat is enabled but  I still get 10% of my  speed.

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

Are you supposed to be gig speeds? I'm assuming you're getting 100 mbps? If so, have you tried a different cable (assuming you're copper, not fiber)? If copper, are you 100% sure you modem supports 1000 Mbps on the WAN out? Do you get 100% of bandwidth if plugged directly to a computer? Did you commit; save after implementing the hwnat ipv4 command?

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

My first  observation when I exacly got 10%  of the speed was the connection medium but I set the port speed to 1000 full duplex,  ect. I am on the sfp port connected  on my WAN and one pc connected to my ER  X SFP. I did  commit, save and reboot after hwnat command was implemented.

I am also  setup on the basic setting, accually WAN +2LAN2 Wizard with nothing else connected to /30.

Static IP range  of /29 supplied by ISP on my "switch" and private range  /24 on my LAN  connectng one  pc only .

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

Yes I did and hwnat is enabled. Restarted several times and checked to make sure.

I still get max 120 mbps of my ~300 mbps connection. Removing the edgerouter and connecting directly gives me the full speed.

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

Update

It turns out that the problem was on the ISP's side.  Misconfiguration on one of their routers.

Thank you guys for assisting.

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

Ok so I've tested a MicroTik router and same issue so it's not the Edgerouter.

Thanks for all the help either way guys I'll investigate further when I have more time.

To be continued Man Happy

Re: Edgerouter X SFP slow speed

Thanks! I was having the same issue and this worked for me. Was getting 500Mbps max and now I'm getting 918Mbps.
