SIP / softphone sound only goes one way

Hi,

Have been working with this for a while and its driving me nuts.

We use a softphone to connect to our provider Telenor.

When a call is made and I answer the caller can hear me but I cannot hear the caller.

The “system conntrack modules sip” is disabled.

When I run test to see if the ports 5060-5061 are opened response is port is closed. But if I run the same test for 32400 it says port is open. It feels like the rules are not applied.

Tried to go in to firewall rule wan_IN and add 5060-5061 to allow and moved it to first rule.

Tried with both enabled and disabled on "Enable hairpin NAT (also known as "NAT loopback" or "NAT reflection")"

I have basicly tried every post on the forum.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: SIP / softphone sound only goes one way

Recently, We had troubles like this too, our PBX provider is nowadays more strict in VOIP packet size setting (20 vs 30 MilliSeconds)

You shouldn't need those portforwards to begin with

btw: 5060 and rtp port range are probably closed, because you test with tcp, not upd.

And rtp ports are dynamically negotiated, and normally closed.

To troubleshoot:  Use a sniffer on the softphone to see rtp packets.

And also run sniffer on ER WAN port

sudo tcpdump -i eth0 -s 0 -w /tmp/capturefile.pcap host <IP address-Telenor-PBX>

Using winscp, you can download file from, and open in wireshark.  Check if rtp uses symmetrical ports  (same port pair for send/receive) as this should automatically pass firewall

Or see packets in CLI

sudo tcpdump -i eth0 -n -v host <IP address-Telenor-PBX>

Re: SIP / softphone sound only goes one way

This trace shows me:

-SIP is using tcp5061, this is encrypted so you can't zoom into the SIP conversation.

afaik, sip ALG or helpers can't do any good, as they also can't see SIP conversation.

-You do not receive any audio on WAN interface !

Lots of outgoing UDP:

MyWanIP.10022 > 195.54.102.220.13642: UDP

but I miss lines like

195.54.102.220.13642  > MyWanIP.10022:  UDP

Steps to resolve:

-try to specify your own WAN address  in the soft-phone, NAT settings

-contact pbx admin

Re: SIP / softphone sound only goes one way

Unfortunately we do not have that option in our softphone. Do you have any other ideas?

Re: SIP / softphone sound only goes one way

Is "MyWanIP"  a public or private IP?

Maybe you're behind another layer of NAT.

Try softphone at different sites.

Re: SIP / softphone sound only goes one way

First of all remove any SIP / RTP port forwards, you don't need them.

Second, enable NAT keep alive on your phone. That's the only way it's going to work

Re: SIP / softphone sound only goes one way

Sorry for the delay, checked with Telenor and there is no settings that we can change in the softphone.

There must be a way to get incoming sound with the edgerouter?
