What is Smart Queue and when would I use it?

Hi all,

Can someone explain what smart queue is and when I would want to use it? I have a ER-PRO and am constantly fighting Internet bandwith "hogs" who use up a lot of bandwidth by dropbox syncs, updates, and even multimedia usage. Can smart queue help manage these high bandwidth using applications and internet access by either limiting or lowering the priority of those items over other traffic?

Smart que helps decongest networks with lots of clients and constant load. It uses fq_codel at its base. Smart que can also decrease bufferbloat, or ping spikes. It will try to automatically prioritize traffic and balance the rated internet speed along all connections.

Very interesting. That actually might be what I need. Do you know if there is any documentation on how to implement it?

It's quite simple. You just enable the directions you want it to be applied to, and then enter the WAN speed of that direction. Click apply and it will do the rest.

From the cli you can always:

sudo tc -s qdisc show dev imq0
sudo tc -s class show dev imq0
sudo tc -s filter show dev imq0

to see the configuration, current rates and stats for the underlying configuration generated by "Smart Queue".

If you need more understanding look at Linux Advanced Routing and Traffic Control Howto or the fq_codel information at the Bufferbloat website.

Are there documentations available for the QoS on Unifi?

Re: What is Smart Queue and when would I use it?

What would happen if I've 50 mbit and 300+ clients and 40 of them decide to start Netflix, while the rest is just surfing/apping?

Would the majority of the bandwith be equally devided across the Netflix users (e.g. 1 mbit/user which is sufficient for a low-quality stream) and a bit for the others?

Re: What is Smart Queue and when would I use it?

Smartqueue is unaware of users or IP addresses, it looks at "network flows."

Each netflix user will be a flow, but a single user downloading 10 files simultaneously has 10 flows, and an unequal share of bandwidth.

bandwidth will be divided equally over 40 netflix viewers.   Opening a webpage start lots of new small flows, smartqueue favors "new" flows so netflix might suffer when lots of browsing takes place.

I know this an old topic but how does the smart queuing handle a network with VOIP.

perfectly. 50 voip phones + 50 client machines + 50 BYOD office on 100mb. Perfect.

Re: What is Smart Queue and when would I use it?

netrunner,

I have a 550Mbit connection up and down.  About 150 clients, 15 or so Ooma phones, and maybe 20+ people who use WiFi calliing.  My question is this: Does enabling Smart Queue actually help in my situation?  Rarely does our traffic (I work at a boarding school) go above 120 Mbps. Because the connection is never tapped out, do you think having it on helps with the WiFi calling? I know in theory that it puts VOIP traffic ahead of other traffic, but in my case, if there is always room, does it matter?

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Re: What is Smart Queue and when would I use it?

Returning to previous question:

For VOIP, set FQ_Codel quantum to 300, this favors small packets like VOIP.

To answer last question:

Most ERs can't handle QoS at 550Mb/s speed, so you're better of without QoS.

If calling quality on WiFi is bad, you need to fix it on the WiFi , QoS on the router won't help

Fix it on the WiFi? Not sure how one would go about that or what that really means...?

What he's saying is that VoIP issues over WiFi are usually WiFi issues, and trying to solve them at the router won't work.

Re: What is Smart Queue and when would I use it?

Im not sure if I completely understand the smart queue, but when I turned it on my speedtest.net results dropped by 2/3.  When I turned it back off my speed went back to full speed..

Re: What is Smart Queue and when would I use it?

smart queue disables offload, and CPU might become the bottleneck before SQ does

The reason you are seeing Speed Test dropping to 1/3rd of your line rate is because Smart Queue is doing its job.

Think of it like QoS - It will restrict a networks streams of packets to share the overall bandwidth fairly so that each user gets a fair slice of the pie.

If you have a large number of devices on your network and mediocre WAN bandwidth, Smart Queue will balance the streams of WAN traffic. If however you are a family of 4 and have a 100Mbps WAN connection, I doubt you will see the benefit unless that is you have a teenage child hogging all the bandwidth with Fortnite Man Wink LOL

Re: What is Smart Queue and when would I use it?

Will Smart Queues prioritize standard LAN over GUEST?  That's the biggest thing I need.

Re: What is Smart Queue and when would I use it?

Smart queue has no clue where packet came from.  To give LAN prio over Guest network, I'd use advanced queue.....which is way harder to setup
