Youtube Block Also Blocks Google Services?

I think I can understand why it would do this, but I want to make sure it's me and not Google. I blocked Youtube via the custome category provided by the router (YouTube), and got a few complaints about Google service reliability... came in this morning to a few screams, but after removing the category they seem to persist. Not sure if it's maybe a cahcing issue, a Google issue, I checked my webproxy and I dropped Youtube from it before I implemented it on the Firewall rule.

Any ideas? Just looking for a sounding board on something else I should check on my end.

Re: Youtube Block Also Blocks Google Services?

Google owns YouTube.  Their stuff is pretty tightly integrated, so if you block one, you usually break the other.

after you take out a webproxy rule, you may have to restart that service.

It's a firewall rule though, not the webproxy?

Re: Youtube Block Also Blocks Google Services?

Sorry, thought you said something about using the webproxy / webfilter.

If you're using firewall rules ... google's IP address space is also YouTube's IP address space (or vice-versa, depending on which way you want to look at it).

Re: Youtube Block Also Blocks Google Services?

I think there is another thread indicating that Ubiquiti is aware of the rule issue. At least relating to google DNS.

Yeah, it made sense to me, I just wanted to see if I was on the right track. It looks like I'll have to restart the router to clear out the firewall setting completely for some reason. Which I can't do until 8:30 tonight. Ugh.

Re: Youtube Block Also Blocks Google Services?

Should be no need to reboot the route.

It maybe easier to block youtube using dns forwarding:

dns {
        forwarding {
            cache-size 300
            listen-on eth0
            listen-on switch0
            name-server 8.8.8.8
            name-server 8.8.4.4
            options address=/.youtube.com/127.1.1.1
            options address=/.facebook.com/127.1.1.1
        }
    }

Re: Youtube Block Also Blocks Google Services?

That was my thought too, @UBNT-stig, but I did a reboot last night and it corrected my issues. Removing the block from the firewall was only partially helpful. Rebooting completely clearing up the remaining problems.
