Add aliases to local DNS

Submitted by -
Status: New Idea

Automatically add aliases to local DNS, provided they are compliant.

Use Case

I manage an R&D lab containing ~100 ethernet sensors/actuators with a high turnover (adding new devices, removing old ones). These are accessed by a central server, which currently references these devices by IP address.

Assigning device IPs via DHCP reservation gets messy as new devices are added and old ones removed, so I'm looking for a cleaner way to manage this. The devices generally don't allow hostname config; if I could instead have the Unifi aliases resolve via local DNS, it would simplify my workflow.

This has been a pain point for some time, so I went ahead and wrote a solution. It's probably a stupid implementation, but it works for my needs. Hopefully this will one day be boiled down to a checkbox hidden in the UI settings.

Purpose:
- Enables LAN access of devices by their Unifi alias names

Usage:
- Edit an alias on the Unifi web UI (Clients tab)
- Wait a minute
- Go to e.g. http://my-alias
