Update Firmware to Give Unifi Switches Layer 3 Routing

Please update firmware for existing Unifi switches to make them layer 3 switches.  This functionality was originally advertised on the product page for the switches for quite some time last year and quietly all mention of layer 3 routing was removed.

Hey guys,

What are your top 3 L3 features in order of priority?

Thanks,

Brandon

  1. QoS (diffserv) and VLAN priority (e.g. assign VoIP to a VLAN for third party VoIP systems)
  2. QoS
  3. QoS

Sorry for sounding like a broken record, but QoS should have been there from day one.

@UBNT-Brandon,

1. Inter-VLAN Routing (across vlans, etc)

2. QoS

3. QoS (have to agree with @dyelton....

My biggest suggestion would be to unify (haha) the EdgeSwitch and UniFi line as much as possible. Right now the UniFi Switch line is very immature, but the hardware is identical to the EdgeSwitch (internally). There should be plans to bring Layer 3 routing plus other enterprise-grade features like  port-based authentication (802.1X), dynamic vlan asignment, etc. to the UniFi Switch. At least open up the CLI interface on the UniFi Switch.

Hi @vbman213,

Good points.  Port-based authentication (802.1X) and dynamic VLAN are being worked on currently.

Also, enabling the CLI from the UniFi Controller directly (similar to what the EdgeRouter has) is also being worked on.  Please reach out to @UBNT-MikeD if you'd like to try out initial releases.

Hi @UBNT-ethanyang, is there a BETA with 802.1X available?

@UBNT-Brandon,

Is there any update on this in terms of getting a new FW update?

Not currently planned.  For more complex scenarios the current idea is to utilize the EdgeSwitch instead.

This is unfortunate. Sharp contrast to what was discussed above back in December

@UBNT-Brandon Couldn't the large majority of the "feature requests" for the UniFi Switch be implemented by simply opening up the CLI? If the hardware supports the same featureset as the EdgeSwitch, at least give us the option to configure these features manually (including L3 switching)
