Moving from cloud key to VM, which OS?

So, i think im gonna move my controller from using cloud key, to a controller installation on a virtual machine instead.

But im not sure on which OS to use.

Is there any OS considered to be "the best" for this?

Or do people here recommend a specific OS?

Heard something about, in the microsoft world, that Windows 10 > Windows Server for the controller, because of more overhead in the server OS.

Re: Moving from cloud key to VM, which OS?

i use a Hyper-V machine with Ubuntu Server 18.04, used this guide to install UniFi https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Wireless/UniFi-Installation-Scripts-UniFi-Easy-Update-Scripts-Ub...

Since the normal controller version is based on Debian its always a better choice to go with linux.

+1 for the Debian/Ubuntu approach. Don't know your feelings about MicroVMs, but i for once typically couple the UniFi controller with DNS and Radius servers on one machine for SOHO installations.

im not that familiar with linux.
But i guess i could try. Man Happy

Is there any difference or downsides of choosing the desktop version instead of server version for using with the controller software?
im thinking that the desktop version has a GUI and the server doesnt?

Correct server is only tekst based. if you only running unifi you dont need more then that.
