Two switches locked up - obtain log files?

[ Edited ]

Hi

Two of our switches appeared to have locked up over the weekend, we had to power cycle them.

They are UniFi Switch 48 POE-500W.

I'm following the steps here https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/204959834-UniFi-How-to-View-Log-Files to view the log files. However this method only goes back to when the switch was restarted. Is there any way to view log files previous to the restart?

Thank you.

No, if you restarted them the logs are gone.

Re: Two switches locked up - obtain log files?

These are production switches so we needed to restart them to get them working again.

Is there a way to modify them so that the Unifi controller collects logs from them? My concern is if this happens again we will need them up and running asap due to them being in production.

What would be the best approach moving forward?

Is there not any "master" system logs that can be downloaded and submitted to Ubnt for inspection?

You could setup a syslog server and configure that server in the controller.

Also, if the switch is locked up you could try to access it via the console port (if that port is still operational).

Hi

We will look at setting up a syslog server and using that in the future.

For now I have the logs, and I've seen these messages when the switch was restarted (I've not checked the other switch logs yet).

Nov 5 07:51:55 GBYOR-SW2 daemon.info switch: DOT1S: Port (38) inst(0) role changing from ROLE_DISABLED to ROLE_DESIGNATED"

Do this indicate that there was a loop? I would have thought so, but would only expect it to be on one port, not lots of them? Unless I'm interpreting the logs incorrectly?

Re: Two switches locked up - obtain log files?

This only tells you that the port is going from state "link down" to state "link up". And this is to be expected when the switch comes back after a reboot.

Re: Two switches locked up - obtain log files?

I enabled remote syslog on our controller, and we lost connection on our switches for approx 30 seconds.

The syslog shows "switch: TRAPMGR: Cold Start: Unit: 0" for the switches.

However when checking via the UniFi cloud controller web GUI, none of the switches are showing that they've recently being restarted, e.g. one switch still shows 158d for its up time.

Before enabling this I couldn't see any thing in the documentation that says it would trigger a restart, is this expected, or a bug?
