UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Unifi controller : 5.4.11

XG firmware : 3.7.49.6201

Hello

I noticed that port storm control settings on the UniFi Switch 16 XG does not persist on firmware updates. More precisely: the storm control settings show up in the Unifi controller correctly for every port after firmware upgrade, but in reality they are not activated on the switch. They are activated again by reissuing a new value for at least one type of storm control for every port. By the way - reissuing the same value as set before causes an error message.

It would be very nice, if storm control settings would be reapplied automatically after an firmware update. And please prevent the UniFi controller error message, if switch properties are reissued with the same values - the error message is confusing.

Many thanks in advance, best regards,

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Unifi controller : 5.4.16

XG firmware : 3.7.58.6385

Hello - this reply is addressed to Ubiquiti tech staff,

I just updated to Unifi controller 5.4.16 and updated firmware 3.7.58.6385 on the UniFi Switch 16 XG. The problem I reported on march still persists. After every firmware update and also on reboots of the UniFi Switch 16 XG, I have to reassign storm control settings on every port of the UniFi Switch 16 XG. The storm control settings values shown in the controller configuration panel persist during upgrade and reboot, but storm control is not activated. I have to change the settings values e.g 500 to 501 (in order to save them) and reapply them in order storm control comes active. This behavior is very very annoying. Please could this be fixed as soon as possible.

Many thanks in advance and best regards

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Hi @relume,

I make a beta firmware to fix this storm control issue. Could you please give it a try and let me know if it works for you?

Here is the image link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzAcQ8coE8yDVkhqUGlQbkdQclE

Filename: US.bcm5341x.gk-xg-strom-control.6620.170704.1332.bin

Please download it to your local drive and do the upgrade via ssh. Attached the instructions for your reference: https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/204910064-UniFi-Changing-the-firmware-of-a-UniFi-device#loca...

Thanks.

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Hello

Thank you very much for the firmware "US.bcm5341x.gk-xg-strom-control.6620.170704.1332.bin". I installed this firmware on the UniFi Switch 16 XG and then reapplied storm control settings. Unfortunately after this upgrade I was not able anymore to access Apple Airplay devices  on the LAN from Computers connected to the UniFi Switch 16 XG. Event after a new reboot of the switch and by reapplied storm control settings, Apple Airplay devices are not accessible anymore. So I reverted the  firmware back to 3.8.3.6587 - also reapplying storm control settings, but also with the effect that Apple Airplay devices are not accessible anymore from this switch. Please notice, that the issue with not persistent storm control activation is also present on the UniFi Switch 48 POE-500W.

Many thanks again and with best regards,

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Hi @relume,

For Apple Airplay devices are not accessible, that's a different issue and It seems something wrong on IGMP snooping. Do you enable the IGMP snooping on the VLAN which your Airplay devices used?

If it's disabled, please check your Apple devices settings.

If it's enabled, can you upgrade all your switches to 3.8.3 and check again?

Thanks.

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Hello @UBNT-GavinKe

Thank you for your advice.

All switches (UniFi Switch 16 XG, UniFi Switch 48 POE-500W) are running fw 3.8.3.6587. Switch "UniFi Switch 16 XG" and "UniFi Switch 48 POE-500W" are connected by 2 aggregated SFP+ ports. On the controller IGMP snooping was/is activated. No VLAN is used at all.

In order that Apple Bonjour and Apple Airplay is working storm control (Multicast) on the switch ports have to be enabled. Before upgarding UniFi Switch 16 XG to fw "US.bcm5341x.gk-xg-strom-control.6620.170704.1332.bin" an reverting to fw 3.83.6587 Apple Bonjour and Airplay worked, but storm settings had to be reassigned after ever switch reboot or fw upgrade.

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

[ Edited ]

Hi @relume,

We tested with a similar topology and firmware - 3.8.3.6587 and gk-xg-storm-control.6620, but still can't reproduce this Multicast issue in our site.

Could you please upgrade US-16-XG to gk-xg-storm-control and help to:
1. Provide the /tmp/system.cfg.

2. Provide the command log:

US.v3.8.3# telnet 127.0.0.1
(UBNT) >en
(UBNT) #show storm-control all
(UBNT) #exit
(UBNT) $exit
US.v3.8.3#

3. Provide the capture packets on the port which your Apple device connected to, both success and fail cases for comparison.

Thanks.

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Hello @UBNT-GavinKe

Thank you very much again for your support. Unfortunately I am not at the location until 1st august in order to make full tests with local Apple devices and your test questions.

In the meanwhile I would be very grateful to you, for providing information how an aggregated SFP+ uplink (in between the UniFi Switch 16 XG and the UniFi Switch 48 POE-500W) is handling storm control and IGMP snooping, as there is no possibility to set storm control on the ports as soon the ports are set to be aggregated.

Many thanks in advance and best regards

Hello @UBNT-GavinKe

In the meanwhile I can report back some "strange" behavior. On the UniFi Switch 16XG for all ports storm control should be activated and the UniFi controller GUI reports it as activated (see screenshot). But on the switch shell storm control reports to be disabled:

Please also find the system.cfg file of the UniFi Switch 16XG - it reports storm control on the ports as enabled:

Ports 1/2 on the  UniFi Switch 16XG are aggregated and uplinked by SFP+ to the UniFi Switch 48 POE-500W on its ports 49/50.

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Hello @UBNT-GavinKe

As reponse to my previouse post I can provide the additional "strange" information. For the UniFi Switch 16 XG the UniFi controller GUI reports that storm control is enabled (see screenshot). On the switch shell storm control reports to be disabled:

BusyBox v1.19.4 (2017-06-09 07:48:42 PDT) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

US.v3.8.3# telnet 127.0.0.1

Entering character mode
Escape character is '^]'.

Warning!
The changes may break controller settings and only be effective until reboot.

Ports 1&2 of the UniFi Switch 16 XG are aggregated and uplinked by SFP+ to the UniFi Switch 48 POE-500W on its ports 49&50.

The file system.cfg file of UniFi Switch 16 XG reports for all ports storm control as enabled.

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Hi @relume,

We don't support storm-control on aggregated ports directly, please turn the port to Switching mode with the storm-control setting you need, then set it back to Aggregate mode.

The IGMP snooping setting is in Settings -> Networks -> Edit Network.

I noticed the "strange" behavior and it had been fixed in my gk-xg-storm-control.6620 image. Your system.cfg looks normal to me, so will check the captured packet to see what's the difference.

Thanks.

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Hello @UBNT-GavinKe

I installed again fw gk-xg-storm-control.6620. After restart storm control seems to be enabled.

BusyBox v1.19.4 (2017-07-04 12:50:29 CST) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

US.gk-xg-strom-control# telnet 127.0.0.1

Entering character mode
Escape character is '^]'.

Warning!
The changes may break controller settings and only be effective until reboot.

0/16 Enable 10000 None Enable 10000 None Enable 10000 None

so it seems that storm control settings are now persitent after upgrades and reboots.

Unfortunately for further investigions why AirPlay does not work at moment over the aggregated link between UniFi Switch 48 POE-500W and UniFi Switch XG I have to wait until I will be at the location.

best regards

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Thanks for the update @relume.

The only difference between two images should be the storm-control takes effect or not. Could you please help to confirm if turn it off would recover the AirPlay connection, and turn it on would cut off the connection?

Assume the AirPlay device is connected to port 3, commands to turn off storm-control.

US.gk-xg-strom-control# telnet 127.0.0.1
(UBNT) >en
(UBNT) #configure
(UBNT) (Config)#interface 0/3
(UBNT) (Interface 0/3)#no storm-control broadcast
(UBNT) (Interface 0/3)#no storm-control multicast
(UBNT) (Interface 0/3)#no storm-control unicast

And to turn it on:

(UBNT) (Interface 0/3)#storm-control broadcast
(UBNT) (Interface 0/3)#storm-control multicast
(UBNT) (Interface 0/3)#storm-control unicast

Use 'exit' to leave CLI.

Thanks.

Re: UniFi Switch 16 XG : Storm Control settings do not persist on firmware upgrades

Hello

I still struggling with the issue - at the moment the persistence of the storm control is not so important - that AirPlay connection does not work over uplinks between UniFi Switch 16 XG and UniFi Switch 48 POE-500W.  Neither with SFP nor 1GBase-T uplinks Airplay source and receiver does see each other.

On the other side if I a attach a non-UniFi-Switch (Netgear) either to the UniFi Switch 16 XG or the UniFi Switch 48 POE-500W and placing some AirPlay source and/or receiver on the non-UniFi-Switch AirPlay connections are working in-between the non-UniFi-Switch and the UniFi-Switch. So I have to assume, that AirPlay packets on the uplinks between UniFi-Switches are in certain way "controlled" and are not allowed to pass.

I would be very grateful for any hint.

Concerning the AirPlay Issue not working between UniFi switches I posted a new message:
