Description

The deployment for this setup begins probably 4 years ago. It's been slowly evolving over time and getting better. I am the in-house full time Tech Director and I've been working with our contract IT provider on this in my spare time. We elected to do all labor and install in-house to save money (because you know, non-profit).

About 4 or 5 years ago, this network consisted of 3-4 different Cable Internet subscriptions, AirPort Extreme routers (everywhere...) and cheap switching gear. It was a mess.

Phase one of the project was eliminating all unnecessary internet subscriptions in attempt to save money. Originally we looked into running fiber underground to all buildings, but that was just too expensive. Our IT provider decided to take a leap of faith, having never worked with AirMax products before, and decided to deploy AirMax (nanostations) for uplinks on each of our buildings. We have 4 "main" buildings connected via Fiber that was installed upon initial construction. All the other buildings were acquired later on (was previously a neighboring strip mall). Using AirMax, we are providing internet and LAN to 5 different buildings in a PTMP setup. This has been rock solid for 4 years now. Several units have been struck by lighting, but surprisingly haven't skipped a beat.

Phase two was the slow deployment of UAPs across campus. We are now up to 19 and they serve us quite well. During high-traffic times (like Sunday mornings) we'll see close to 400 clients on the wireless network at any given moment. UBNT handles it like a champ!

We are continuing to add APs to improve coverage/density in various areas. Phase three hopefully later this year will include upgrading our existing PTMP units to the newer AC models. Until then - we'll continue to be happy with this setup!

Enjoy these photos of the various deployments.
