Description

Hi all, I've just completed my home networking setup after moving house. I've switched from a Synology 2600ac router to a Unifi USG, 250W PoE switch, 1x Pro AP and a cloud key.

I've opted to wire in quite a few of my devices as routing the cables was fairly easy in a bungalow loft.

I'm running two G3 dome cameras too.

My remaining tasks are to improve outside coverage with an outdoor access point and possibly get an NVR unit for the cameras as I can only live view them at the moment. I also need to work on moving my IoT devices to a separate VLAN but I'm having a few issues with all my SONOS speakers not communicating.

Some questions:

1) whats the current recommended outdoor unifi AP unit that would work with my setup?

2) does anyone know what the power use in WATTS is for the NVR unit? I'm trying to keep my power usage as low as possible. The unifi system is using a total of 54 WATTS at the moment excluding my Virgin Media Superhub 3 running in modem-mode (which runs at 11 Watts).

3) I resolved my initial problems with the SONOS system by putting the switch into STP mode. However moving it into its own VLAN stopped all communications between controllers on my default LAN and the VLAN. I've read various threads on the forum but not yet solved the issue. Any tips would be appreciated.

for sonos look at mdns bridge. Haven't done it myself yet bu to get you started: https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Routing-Switching/Configure-Sonos-across-subnets-on-USG/td-p/197...

1. Unifi Mesh or Mesh Pro are your best choice for fully outdoor access points: https://unifi-mesh.ubnt.com/ (despite the name they do nothave to be run as "mesh points" at all).

2. THe NVR seems to use a 65w power supply, whether that's its precise usage I'm not quite sure. If you can wait a bit the upcoming Cloudkey G2 Plus will be a small computing device that runs both Unifi Controller and Unifi Video and can also be powered by 8023af PoE.

3. You might also have luck by enabling the various individual devices to communicate across the Vlans. There are lots of forum threads on that.

@bencrosby that is a Tado smart thermostat bridge. More details here: https://www.tado.com/us/

@andrewsheldon thanks for the info.

@florisvdk thanks I'll check that out.

@SteveT_Coona brilliant! The G2 controller sounds exactly like what I want. Is it still in beta? I really didn't want to run another mains powered device as I'm out of space in the rack. Thanks also for the mesh info. I did assume that they could only be used together in a mesh so didn't investigate any further. It sounds like the right solution for my needs.

@x6tus  The G2 only relatively recently announced in beta so I suppose it won't be out for a while yet. Just mentioned it as a future option really.

AC Mesh APs are very good for a variety of outdoor purposes, I've used them both for mesh and directly wired-in access, they work well both ways. Obviously wired-in will give higher throughput, but I've found mesh to be surprisingly useful as well.

Nicely done.  Professional and neat installation.  Well done, you should be proud of your work - I would be!

Is that a cover over the USG? If so where did you get it?

@JLSRR-NETWORK thank you!

@pshilling nope, it's just a normal USG. I've drilled into a 2U blanking plate on the rack to allow me to mount it on a bolt.

Beautiful job.  Too bad we can't rack our USG.
