Description

The need for fast and reliable guest WiFi at public venues is becoming as common as running water and electricity. Some achieve this better than others and often the reason for a negative experience is not the software being used or the method of delivery but the hardware behind it.

When we were tasked with delivering a guest WiFi solution to a large conference venue in Edinburgh, I was happy to learn that a competent IT firm had already fitted out the venue fully with Ubiquiti UniFi hardware all managed using an externally hosted cloud controller. The network consists of 103 access points and has a range of indoor and outdoor spaces with over 18’000 square metres of exhibition space.

This venue hosts over 250 events annually and welcomes over a million visitors each year so, the guest network has to be top notch. BLACKBX provides a seamless login experience pointing guests to a captive portal allowing the venue to collect any data on guests that they wish. The RHS decided to collect email and postcode information; from this, we are constantly updating a large mailing list and user origin map.

Some say that data is the new oil but data without the proper software and utilisation it is about as valuable as oil would be if engines were never invented. BLACKBX can integrate directly with the vast majority of marketing automation tools such as MailChimp, Constant Contact and Dotmailer. All opt-ins and verification happens right within our system meaning that all information captured is fully compliant with GDPR and verified to be accurate by the user themselves.

So far, we have collected fully complaint and verified information of around 15’000 people at this venue all underpinned by a solid UniFi guest network.
