Description

At 0610 on the morning of the 10th of December I was awoken by a metallic sound I assumed was a car door slamming in my driveway. Knowing that doors shouldn't be opening and closing that time of the day I rolled over in my bed and started up my phone. I quickly brought up the Unifi Video App and reviewed the recorded video from my cameras. I quickly discovered I had an intruder that had broken into my vehicles and attempted to break into my house! As the thief was heading to the side entrance of my house he noticed the glow of my Unifi Camera G3 IR lights. He grabbed a nearby shovel, and whacked the camera as hard as he could, to destroy it. This was the clanging I heard. Seeing this, I ran out the door to confront the thief while the wife called 911. Unfortunately the thief ran off by that point, After driving around and not finding the guy I came home, fired up the PC, used the Unifi Video software to easily pull the videos and post them to Facebook and forward them to the police in the hopes of ID'ing the miscreant. The footage was clear enough for the local community and the police to easily identify the suspect within hours. Happy to report, there is a warrant out for the arrest of one Erik Larsen. And the camera he walloped with a shovel is still working like a champ! Just had to secure it to its anchors again. This guy was on a break and enter rampage all night and would have never been ID'd and charged if it weren't for the excellent hardware and software made by Ubiquiti. Thank You!

**update**

This guy was caught late February, red handed steaing a leaf blower from a friend of mine. His warrant for my incident came up and off to jail he went!

I gave the video to Ubiquiti; They might post it. Funny to see the open mouth look of "whoops" on buddy's face when he realizes he Caught on Camera.

tried to DM you, but no-go. So.....

Fellow BC resident here.

I liked your story and the fact you got the SOB! One little note though.... If he hasn't been tried and convicted you should probably edit out his name.

There are some laws surrounding the publication of names in this fashion and you could be setting yourself up for a counter-suit. At very least, perhaps add "alleged perpetrator".

Just don't want you to get burned. Man Happy

Hopefully the police will be as effective as Unify in catching bad guy.

We had a similar instance in the Ashton Technology Solutions office.  We have Ubiquiti cameras and when an intruder broke in a few weeks back, he was kind enough to look right at the IR camera.  "Oh $hit" was his response when the alarm system activated.  Footage was downloaded and sent to the local PD.  When the guy was picked up later that night, breaking in elsewhere, our footage was used to put him in jail!
