NVR vs Protect and plans for new install

[ Edited ]

Recently, I purchased the following equipment for my Ubiquiti home network.

USG

CK gen1

16Port POE switch

24port Managed switch

NVR

5 g3 cams

2 g3 flex

1 dome

2 AP Pro

I apparently purchased this without researching the Protect line of things.  In order to keep up with the future and possibly answer others who have the same question, what do I do with my system?  With the addition of Protect and the CK gen 2+, if I upgrade, is my NVR and CK gen 1 useless?  if I were going to do another system with cameras and an ap, would I just need a poe switch and ck gen2 connect to a name brand router or do I still need a USG?

@tullyamo

Just bare in mind that Protect is currently not as feature-rich as Unifi Video (UFV), but it will be at a point in the future.
And UFV has some known issues (like non-functional Timeline).
I'm not sure if we will see an option to upgrade to Protect on Unifi NVR (the black box).

In the future, you should just ask in the forums before purchasing - usually you'll get a response fairly quickly with recommendations.

Hi @tullyamo

The NVR and UCK-G1 is not useless - you can use them somewhere else or sell them - but yes, they're not needed, if you get UCK-G2-Plus.

You need a router (typically that's doing NAT, firewall, DHCP and a few other things), so if you already have a "name brand" router, then you do not need USG, and can use that somewhere else or sell it.

Not sure what the 24 port switch is for - I'm guessing you have regular cabled computers, that you need to connect too?

Re: NVR vs Protect and plans for new install

The 24port was for my homelab and server.  Bummer on the NVR though, just bought it last week.   Perhaps Ubiquiti should put a warning or pop up when you purchase the CK gen1 and NVR.  This would help new customers avoid a potential bad experiene. Also a guide on equipment purchase could be of use and allow customers to build their system from a few answered questions and cut down on the amount of redundant purchases.  I am very happy with my setup, however, at the same time there is a slight bit of dissappoinment.  I'll need to upgrade already and just set it up.

At this point in time, the Cloud Key (Gen 1) plus a NVR is a better experience for UniFi Video that the Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus running UniFi Protect. UBNT is working on Release 3.10 of the NVR and it's currently available on the Beta channel.

I would go for the UCK-G2-Plus and use it just for SDN for now. The UniFi SDN would benefit from the battery backup and the disk space allow more data retention.

You can always test drive Protect and decide when it is mature enough.
