2.4 vs 5 Ghz - and how to improve 2.4Ghz?

Hi there

First post on forum :-)

I hava an unifi AP AC LR which delivers wifi to my home (167m2), no USG or any other fance equipment

Internetspeed is app 25/20 on an LTE connection, so far working great (ping is app 30-40ms)

Living in an area without that many wifi's, so what's the benefit of choosing 5 Ghz (if any) and can I improve the 2.4 Ghz?

Now it just uses standard values - think that bandwith is changed from 20 to 40 Mhz

2 ATV's are connected via LAN, also 2 computers via LAN - so "only" using wifi for 2xIphone SE & 1xIphone6 & 1xIpad4 & my printer & a chromebook & 3xSonos1

Nothing fancy here - and no need for downloading big files on wifi

Has tried to have both 5 & 2.4 Ghz enable, but seems that 5Ghz don't cover end of house, meaning that phones changes to 4G or 2.4Ghz... Don't think it works that smooth afterall, therefor for now disabled 5 Ghz...

Hello @JanaThomsen,

Welcome to the community!

5GHz doesn't penetrate that well as 2.4GHz.

I recommend keeping 5GHz on and using the following radio settings.

2.4 GHz
Channel width: HT20
Chanel: 1/6/11 | Choose one of these channels, a RF scan will help you choose the most clean one.
Transmit Power: Low/Medium

5GHz
Channel width: VHT40 | Optional VHT80 might decrease wireless stability
Chanel: 36/44 | Optional (149/157) Choose one of these channels, a RF scan will help you choose the most clean one. Avoid using DFS Channels
Transmit Power: Medium/High

Re: 2.4 vs 5 Ghz - and how to improve 2.4Ghz?

Consider getting an additional accespoint, best improvement for your 2G network as well Smiley Very Happy

Controller (5.11.29): CK 1.0.4
Unifi (ca-framework-hap2.8-spf53-4.0.4.10592): UAP-AC-IW-Pro, UAP-AC-LR, UAP-AC-M & USW8-60W (4.0.43.10459)

Better WiFi coverage is not achieved by increasing transmission power, but by increasing the number of accesspoints.

Re: 2.4 vs 5 Ghz - and how to improve 2.4Ghz?

I actually have wifi in my router as well, turned off at the moment

Router Huawei e5186s-22a

This router is placed in the far end of the house - could I just turn that on, and give it the same SSID as the Unifi?

Right now, its calles Unifi 2 & Unifi 5 on the Unifi AP - so if same name applied on the router wifi, the phones etc. will automaticly pick the strongest/best signal?

And Sonos will not get confuesed? (connected via a bridge over LAN)

Hello @JanaThomsen,

I believe sonos is only 2.4GHz.

You can use 1 SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz
