Adoption Errors

[ Edited ]

Troubleshooting Performed:

Upgraded controller to v 5.10.17. Controllers are 4.0.21.9965 (Failed AP-AC-PRO) and two 4.0.15.9872 (AP-Pro) are already managed and working OK on 4.x.

DNS looks up the unifi controller by the hostname 'unifi' on all LAN devices.

Reset the AP to factory using both physical button, and Unifi Discover tool. The device is always pingable, and on the network using a unique IP. SSH is accessible and shows the Wireless device.

No Firewalls or filtering are taking place. The device is on the same LAN as the controller. Port tcp/8080 is open inbound on the controller and I used TCPDUMP on the Unifi AP to confirm that they build a session when I initiate the /inform URL request. This session has no RST packets and seems to hang quite a bit. It transmits for more than a minute without any termination of the session and the AP stays at 'Adopting'.

No AP found in the console window normal discovery have to use the Discovery Utility to see it.

No controller logs or events are recorded in the UI of the controller. It's running on Windows 7 and both the Windows Firewall and Antivirus Firewall are disabled in policy.

Chrome discovery window does not pick up any devices in the scan.

It should be easier than this but I'm having a hard time. Any ideas? See recording for confirmation.

Re: Adoption Errors

Has the Controller been uninstalled and reinstalled? Backup your Controller prior to performing this action.

Any chance you have a second computer where you'd be able to spin up a Controller and attempt the adoption there?

Re: Adoption Errors

Anything in the AP's log that you'd be able to provide?

Have you attempted to set-inform from the AP's CLI?

set-inform http://x.x.x.x:8080/inform

Where x.x.x.x is the IP of your Controller. The set-inform will need to be performed twice.

I did and it behaves the same way. I see the session open up to the controller 8080 but it stalls with no more push packets and hangs open. Network is very plain single subnet, dell switch, no vlans, sonicwall at the gateway but nothing filtering on the inside.

Re: Adoption Errors

Would you try to set-inform to the IP of the computer hosting the Controller instead of using 'unifi'? Does that make any difference?

Can you tail -f /var/log/messages from the AP while performing the set-inform and provide the output?

Re: Adoption Errors

Reinstalled Java 8. Also, to adopt a new AP you have to be in the super user can't be any role below it.

Re: Adoption Errors

@infostruction Happy to hear you were able to get this resolved.

For clarity, are you stating that you had to be logged in as the Super Admin in the Controller UI to complete adoption? There should only be one set of SSH creds, and you can't su to root from the AP.

Re: Adoption Errors

Yes, super-admin to complete the adoption. There's no option if you are any role below that one. There is no nexus between the login to the UI and SSH as far as I know.
