Country house: 3 Indoor APs + 1 Outdoor - Advice

[ Edited ]

Mates, after succefully deploying switches and APs in a school, I'm planning deployment in a country house, whose stone walls range 31".  3 floors, 3,000 sq. foot each.

The idea is to install

1 switch Unifi 16 150W +

3 APs  UAP-AC-Lite +

1 outdoor unit, all POE.

  1. What model i suggested for outdoor, assuming it may help in-range indoor units?
  2. It may be possible that more indoor units are required, increasing total APs to 5/6. How to avoid channel overlap?
  3. Other thoughts?

Re: Country house: 2 Indoor APs + 2 Outdoor - Advice

Hello @Reex,

UAP AC Lites will most likely be enough.

Do you have any floorplans?

Re: Country house: 2 Indoor APs + 2 Outdoor - Advice

I have had very good luck with my UAP-AC-M's that I have deployed at a few different sites.

The in-wall units could be handy to deploy in some rooms, should you see signal issues.

Re: Country house: 2 Indoor APs + 2 Outdoor - Advice

Unfortunatelly building plans are..... in the country! So I have made two poor drafts that will give you idea of dimensions, one with AP units, one without units.

  • Yellow gradient = effective APs
  • Green gradients are signals reaching other floors
  • Gray rooms do not need coverage.

Walls depth/(thickness):

  • 80cm outer perimeter,
  • 50cm inner thicker walls,
  • 12cm thinner.

Slabs are tuscan style, with wood beams and old tiles

I have changed my plan to 3 indoor units, 1 outdoor (Mesh)

Your thoughts?

Hello @Reex,

Try the headmap in the controller and post that result.

Re: Country house: 2 Indoor APs + 2 Outdoor - Advice

Wow!!!! What a tool!

A few questions:

  • What wall type should I use in the editor? There's no stone wall and I couldn't find an absorbtion rate from this anywhere
  • At what height from the ground the device is simulated to be?
  • Is this tool reliable?

Re: Country house: 2 Indoor APs + 2 Outdoor - Advice

Hello @Reex,

It's not 100% accurate.

You can choose for a brick wall?

It would be nice to evaluate signal performance through floors..

Re: Country house: 3 Indoor APs + 1 Outdoor - Advice

If the walls between S and K on the ground floor are stone and 50cm thick, I think you may have difficulty getting coverage with one access point between two rooms, especially with 5GHz.  The only way you will know for certain is to try it.

Good luck!

Re: Country house: 3 Indoor APs + 1 Outdoor - Advice

Hello @Reex,

Did you set a scale?
Is this the 5GHz or 2.4GHz map?

Looks like you need more UAPs.

Re: Country house: 3 Indoor APs + 1 Outdoor - Advice

[ Edited ]

Scale is set properly, and we're showing 2.4GHz band.

For ground floor, S & K are the only required rooms, while on first floor, all rooms with a red underscore are required. Apparently only the left side "L" room has no coverage at all, but it is the room right on top the ground floor AP....

Any trick to test floors?

This tools is a good starter but then you're required to test on site!

Re: Country house: 3 Indoor APs + 1 Outdoor - Advice

Hello @Reex,

You can't do multiple floors ( 3d modeling ) you will have to do a site survey yourself for that.

Re: Country house: 3 Indoor APs + 1 Outdoor - Advice

One last question.

Heat map beams, made me think about obsatcles. As walls are really thick, rooms are like a cube carved-in. Assuming I won't install an AP in each room, but I'd rather place one to cover 2/3 rooms, I wonder if it may be wiser to place the AP on the walls, to maximise beam coverage through doors.

For instance, this is a room solid model:

Screenshot (21).png

2D view, AP Lite on ceiling, AP Mesh on wall, is the Lite coverage is weaker\lower than Mesh on wall???

Hello @Reex,

Take a look at the radiation patterns of the UAPs.

I Did. Lite and Mesh are weaker than the high end models, and both show irregular radiation distribution. Mesh seems weaker than Lite.

In my case, mounting APs on ceilings may not be the better choice as radiation will have a limited cone through doors when compared to the one generated by the same AP mounted on walls, this because the great absorption done by walls, including the part over the doors, as the door openings height is roughly 50cm shorter than the wall height. You could say that it would be wiser to mount the Lite model on the wall, say at 160cm height to maximise radiation through doors, however it may be wiser to install Mesh models, as these would be less intrusive from an aesthetic perspective.
