Error messages to syslog server

We recently started sending our UniFi logs to our syslog server and we have seen a few "error" level messages that seem to reoccur rather frequently on random APs.  Are these anything to wory about or can they be ignored:

U7PG2,,v4.0.21.9965: : libubnt.get_ieee80211req_sta_info(): IOCTL_STA_INFO2 failed: No such file or directory

U7HD,,v4.0.21.9965: : ace_reporter.reporter_fail(): Unable to resolve (http://unifi:8080/inform)

U7PG2,,v4.0.21.9965: : ace_reporter.reporter_fail(): inform failed #1 (last inform: 73 seconds ago), rc=5

Re: Error messages to syslog server

Hello @K_M_,

At 2/3 the UAP lost connection to the controller.

Try upgrading to the latest beta for 1. ( follow this article to sign up for BETA )

Re: Error messages to syslog server

Hi @AmazedMender16.  I appreciate the quick response and suggestion.

Unfortunately, this is not my personal wireless (it is for a school), so I am very wary about running beta versions of software/firmware.  Do we know if it addresses this specific issue?

Re: Error messages to syslog server

I have to say I'm rather disappointed in Ubiquiti Support at this one.  Here is their response:

Sorry, we don't have much info on what that log could exactly mean.
It depends on the controller settings applied and the environment where the AP is connected.

You could also post a feature request to explain the logs triggered in the syslog server and controller logs.

Our developers are always looking for new ideas and suggestions to implement in future firmware releases.
Add a prefix of "Request" and a description of the feature you're looking for. This way we can keep track of your feature, and other users can also chime in with input.

Please click on the product for which you want to post the suggesting/feature request
UniFi Feature Requests / Suggestions

Didn't they write the software?  I'm confused as to how "we don't have much info" on their own logs?!?

Re: Error messages to syslog server

@K_M_

IOCTL_STA_INFO2 is log spam that is cleaned up in newer versions.

reporter_fail() can indicate that the controller was simply offline, or it could indicate dns issues.  If you're AP's are communicating with the controller the way you expect, then it's probably the former.  If you see AP's come and go connected/disconnected, then it's probably a dns configuration issue.

And no, the individuals handling the support requests did not write the software Man Happy

Re: Error messages to syslog server

@UBNT-BenBuckley

Thank you for the update.  It is appreciated.

I realize the first line of support probably didn't have anything to do with writing the software, but it just felt like they didn't even want to try and help me get the answers and that was a bit frustrating.

Regarding the reporter_fail() issue, what is the interval that an AP (UAP-AC-Pro) would attempt to reach the controller?  I plan to do some testing to track this one down.

Re: Error messages to syslog server

@K_M_ the inform defaults to 30 seconds, but there are events that will trigger an immediate inform, and also events that will slow it down.  So the interval is not fixed.

A quick way to see if an AP is losing it's controller connection is to check the Alerts and Events.  If you don't see consistent disconnect messages there, then that most likely means that you're seeing the log entries at times when the AP or controller are offline for some reason, in which case you would expect to see the messages that you're seeing.

Re: Error messages to syslog server

@UBNT-BenBuckley

Thanks for the information.  One more thing.  Is there a chart for recommended system resources for the controller (CPU, RAM, etc)?

I ask because we have the following UniFi equipment and wanted to be sure we were meeting or exceeding:

(8) sites

(16) switches (the rest are Cisco or Edge switches)

(535) access points (UAP-AC-Pro and UAP-HD)

Our current controller is running as a service on the following (it is a VM on ESXi):

Windows Server 2012 R2

2 vCPUs

16 GB RAM

Currently, it doesn't seem to be maxing any resources, but I wanted to get another opinion on how much power it should have.

Re: Error messages to syslog server

@UBNT-BenBuckley, in which versions are you referring to where IOCTL_STA_INFO2 will be cleaned up?

I am currently on:
- Controller: 5.10.23 (Ubuntu)
- AP Code: 4.0.21.9965 which is listed in the error code above

I see my syslog flooded with these messages

Re: Error messages to syslog server

Hello @disco83,

The first post was also on 4.0.21 so later firmware will most likely include it.

You can try 4.0.30 for now.

Re: Error messages to syslog server

@disco83 I'm not 100% sure when it was cleaned up.  But @AmazedMender16 is right, 4.0.30 and later should have it cleaned up.

Re: Error messages to syslog server

@AmazedMender16 and @UBNT-BenBuckley, thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of that firmware. However, I can report it made no difference

Re: Error messages to syslog server

Hello @disco83,

Than you could try the latest BETA or wait for new firmware, the message shouldn't harm your UAP.

Re: Error messages to syslog server

@disco83 when you're on 4.0.30, do you see that message occasionally, or does it spam your logs?  It's okay to see it occasionally

Re: Error messages to syslog server

@UBNT-BenBuckley I am currently travelling, so probably not for the next couple of weeks. I am open to it though.

Is there something in particluar you want to check? I can give you whatever info that you need in the meantime.

Re: Error messages to syslog server

Nothing particular to check, I just wanted to jump on the console of the AP and see if I could see anything amiss.  let me know when you're back, and are available to troublshoot.
