Macs connect to UAP-AC-PRO VHT80 5 GHz radio at 40 MHz wide

[ Edited ]

I am in the process of determining whether I can replace some Apple Airport Extreme 802.11ac Base Stations used as WAPs only with UAP-AC-Pros.

What I am finding is even if the signal is better and noise lower, the Macs all report connecting to the UAP Pros using a 40 MHz channel (the radio is set to VHT80 mode.) This is true even if the Mac is literally within a foot of the Pro.

If I switch back to the AIrPort Extremes they connect in 80 MHz mode, and back to the Pro it's 40 MHz again.

Am I missing a setting or are the Macs just deciding to connect at 40 MHz wide rather than 80 MHz?

If I can't resolve this, I'm tempted to return the UAC Pros and buy some refurbed Airport Extremes the next time they are available.

Hello @kucharsk,

Could you post your system config?

Can you get this from the iOS app? I have the device setup as a stand-alone via the app.

Are you powering off the airport when you test connectivity to the Pro.  Try your tests when only one AP is transmitting at a time to rule out RF conflicts.

Hello @kucharsk,

Can you apply the following Radio settings?

Use VHT 80 in your case.

2.4 GHz

Channel width: HT20

Chanel: 1/6/11 | Choose one of these channels, a RF scan will help you choose the most clean one.

Transmit Power: Low/Medium

5GHz

Channel width: VHT40 | Optional VHT80 might decrease wireless stability

Chanel: 36/44 | Optional (149/157) Choose one of these channels, a RF scan will help you choose the most clean one. Avoid using DFS Channels

Transmit Power: Medium/High

Also what firmware version is the UAP on?

Glenn R.

[ Edited ]

Since I connect fine at 40 MHz and my complaint is it won't connect at 80, I think VHT80 is a "must set." :-)

Changing to channel 149 or 157/radio power High does get Macs to connect at an 80 MHz channel width, so apparently they must not like the channel "Auto" was coming up with.

Firmware is 3.9.54.9373.
