Throughput optimization for guest-mode enabled networks

I've started this thread to consolidate questions and answers regarding throughput when guest-mode is enabled.

The following settings limit max data throughput on the UAP-AC-PRO/LITE/LR:

1) Enabling guest-mode on one SSID limits max throughput to ~350 Mbps on all SSID's

2) Enabling guest portal on one SSID limits max throughput to ~150 Mpbs on all SSID's

A firmware is currently in alpha testing that fixes these two issues.  The update has a known limitation where the rate-limiting feature is disabled for clients that are connected to a non-guest SSID (rate limiting still works for clients connected to a guest-SSID).

For adventurous users that want to try out the firmware, here is a link:

Re: Throughput optimization for guest-mode enabled networks

does this only apply to guest-mode enabled AP's?  I thought there was rate-limiting happening even when no guest SSID was enabled?

Re: Throughput optimization for guest-mode enabled networks

@UBNT-BenBuckley

I've read that a fix is implemented in version 4.9.2 Beta.

Is the problem fixed also on the first gen UAP, UAP-Pro, UAP-AC?

Please give kudo's to the people who have helped you and mark your thread as solved when you receive a solution to your issue.

Re: Throughput optimization for guest-mode enabled networks

@osunifi The limitiation that rate-limiting does not work for non-guest SSID's has not been fixed, though it is in progress.

As of right now, the update mentioned in this thread does not apply to Gen 1.  That will change in some future release, although I cannot comment as to when it will happen.

Ben B

has this been fixed yet?

Re: Throughput optimization for guest-mode enabled networks

Do you have a timeline of when the bandwidth limitations will be able to be enforced on NON guest SSIDs?  This is a pretty important feature.  Also to be able to manually throttle certain users on the building network will be useful.

Re: Throughput optimization for guest-mode enabled networks

@chriswinters the fix will be in the next release (currently scheduled for Beta release June 29th).  It will apply to 3.4.X and 3.7.X.

An image for Gen2 hardware, based on 3.4.X LTS is now available.  See this thread for details:

Re: Throughput optimization for guest-mode enabled networks

It does not seem like this is being exactly addressed here, but you said you wanted to consolidate issues regarding throughput when guest-mode is enabled. My non guest-mode ssid gets full bandwidth but my guest-mode ssid does not -- and I want it to. It is around 50% (30Mb of my 65Mb connection). I see others on the forum are having the same problem. Is ubnt aware of this and working on a fix?

Re: Throughput optimization for guest-mode enabled networks

@ericinredding It is a known issue as explained in the first post of this thread.  If you are using guest mode to impose the redirect portal or client isolation, then you are unfortunately stuck with the throughput bottleneck.

If you just want a different SSID/Password for some users, you can create a second SSID and leave guest-network disabled.

Also, based on the speeds that you posted, it seems like your rates may be slower for reasons other than the throughput bottleneck.  I  recommend checking that your AP's are configured to provde the rates you wan't, check your coverage and channel utilization plan, and other basic config settings that impact rates.

Note that in our testing, on Gen2 AP's (UAP-AC-Pro/Lite/LR), whith the AP properly configured, the guest networks could still get 350Mbps.

@UBNT-BenBuckley

With all due respect; but I would disagree. I've done some extensive testing in the past on this matter. See this thread: http://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Wireless-Beta/Guest-network-impact-on-Wifi-performance/m-p/162091...

My results were that when connected to a SSID with Guest policies enabled the CPU of the AP maxes out around 240Mbit, when a guest portal is used, the CPU maxes out even faster, at around 85Mbit.

With guest policies enabled, there sure is some improvement to be made.

Re: Throughput optimization for guest-mode enabled networks

@Campotrabajo 350 Mbps is the top limit on a guest network for 5GHz, 80MHz channel on UAP-AC-Pro (3 spatial streams), with 1300 PHY rate to the client.  I stated "when the AP is properly configured," I should have said "under optimal conditions."

They key factor is that you will experience the limit when X number of network packets are passing through the system on a guest network.  The number of streams in use, the band, the channel width, and the real time TX rate that the AP is getting for the client all impact how much data you can get out of those X number of network packets.

Thanks for mentioning it, I didn't intend for my comment to be misleading.  Hopefully this helps clear it up.
