Unifi AC Mesh with UniFi AP Outdoor+ as AP?

Hi

I run wireless for a camping area. I have been using two UniFi AP Outdoor+ for wifi.

I have been thinking about adding more APs because the caravans block a lot of the wifi signals. I was wondering if the Unifi AC Mesh can work with a  UniFi AP Outdoor+ wirelessly?

I know that you must have 5ghz to configure AC Mesh wirelessly. But does it require 5Ghz "uplink" after initial configuration?  Or can it then connect to 2,4Ghz Unifi AP  Outdoor+?

Hope someone knows something about this.

A dual-band island AP requires 5GHz for the uplink.  See here for details:

Here's a feature request re: 2.4GHz wireless uplink for dual-band APs, but not sure that it's meant to work retroactively with single-band uplink AP:

Re: Unifi AC Mesh with UniFi AP Outdoor+ as AP?

Hi,

I have (unfortunately)  made the test by myself.

I had a customer with 3 unifi UAP Outdoor +, I wanted to extend the wireless network using Mesh APs.

I checked the document:

https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002262328-UniFi-Feature-Guide-Wireless-Uplink

It contains a wonderfull matrix that tells you which AP is compatible and wich is not.

UAP Outdoor + are said to be compatible, but in fact they are not.

You can not uplink a Mesh AP to an Outdoor+ AP.

Could the unifi team update the pre-quoted document with a real compatibility matrix?

Unfortunately, the matrix in that document tells only which UAP models support Wireless Uplink (and which can do multi-hop), but not how they can be matched between different models.

I couple of posts back in this thread, I mentioned this document:

https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/205146000-UniFi-Set-up-UAPs-in-wireless-uplink-topology

In there, you can find information about the limitations in mixing different models.  Taking your two devices as an example:

  • wired UAP-AC-M and wireless UAP-Outdoor+ does work
  • wired UAP-Outdoor+ and wireless UAP-AC-M does not work

I really do wish that the they would consolidate the two documents.  It would help prevent this kind of misunderstanding.
