I need some help troubleshooting my Unifi controller.
The VM the server is running on keeps crashing. Its not just the unifi service that crashes, its the whole Ubuntu VM that crashes and is totally unresponsive.
I had this problem on a previous Unifi controller VM. I created a entirly new VM and manually installed Ubuntu 18.04 and Unifi and the problem persists. The server runs for maybe 10 hours and then totally locks up. The VM's screen frezes, mouse and keyboard inputs do not affect it. The VM drops off the network, and the only way to get it working again is to power the VM off and then on.
Controller Version: 5.9.29
Ubuntu Version: 18.04 LTS
Unifi, Mongod log files are attached.
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreicated.

Hello @User789876,
How much memory does the VM have?
How many devices are you running on the controller?
Regards,
Glenn R.

The VM has 4 CPU cores and 8GB of RAM.
The only unifi devices are 1x USG and 1x8 port switch. We use the Unifi system for the hotspots, we have a network of Ruckus hotspots in our building that are routed though the USG and the Unifi Hotspot, there is not usually more than 5 guests connected to the hotspot at any given time.

Hello @User789876,
Doesn’t make sense that the entire VM freezes with only 2 devices...
Are you running anything else on the VM?

Glenn R.

No Unifi Controller is the only thing installed on this VM.

Hello @User789876,
No way! Could you remove the custom entries in the system.properties file?
UniFI Network controller with 2 devices should run fine on a 2GB VM with 1 CPU core.

Glenn R.

The problem persists when the custom XMS/XMX values are removed from the system.properties file.

I only added the custom XMS / XMX values yesterday. The controller had was crashing before the custom memory values were inserted.
I've removed the XMS/XMX values and restarted the unifi service . I fully expect it to crash again today, but I can't say how long it will take.

Hello @User789876,
I wan't to see if the VM crashes/freezes with the UniFi Services stopped not restarted...
service unifi stop
Sounds like something is wrong with the VM settings.
Are you using as VM Host/Software?
Regards,
Glenn R.

Hello @User789876,
So the VM still crashes/freezes if you restart the VM and turn of the UniFi Service?
If so than there is something wrong with your VM settings...
What are you using as VM Host/Software?
Regards,
Glenn R.

I dont know if the server will crash with Unifi stopped or not. Personally I doubt it will, but we will see.
Since this problem started I havent seen either of my Unifi VMs run for more than about 12 hours with out crashing. If VM I stopped the service on is still running at about 9 PM local time tonight Im going to have to say its not a problem with the OS / VM.
I'm using VMware ESXi 6.5.

Hello @User789876,
Could you share the VM Settings?
How much memory/disk space did you allocate?

Glenn R.

Hello @User789876,
Could you create a new VM with Ubuntu Server 18.04, don't install anything on it... Just keep it running.
Setup a constant ping to the new VM and see if it stays up..
Regards,
Glenn R.
