Unifi SDN Controller vs. Unifi (version) Controller

There appear to be two nominally different controllers for download at https://www.ubnt.com/download/unifi.  One name says it is an SDN controller, and the other does not.

Example:

UniFi SDN Controller 5.8.24 for Windows

UniFi 5.4.11 Controller for Windows

I did a bit of due dilligence research, but could not find a written distinguishing difference between these versions (other than the obvious version numbers).  So what makes the SDN controller different?  Is it appropriate for managing Unifi UAP's, or should I just be using the non-SDN-labeled controller for only managing Unifi wireless products?  Or is "SDN" just a labeling change?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Unifi SDN Controller vs. Unifi (version) Controller

SDN is just the new naming convention. Nothing has really changed in this regard, but obviously from 5.4.11 -> 5.8.24 many additions/changes have been made.

I only noticed this because I subscribe to the updates blog feed and noticed all of the recent articles for updates had been republished as "new" since the title was changed to include SDN.

But what does SDN stand for? I can't find that information anywhere.

Re: Unifi SDN Controller vs. Unifi (version) Controller

It looks like Unifi and Unifi Video (and/or Unifi Protect) are going to be combined...

What is that? I dont have that section on my controller.

---Edit, nvm I was looking at the dashboard on my controller locally, when I look at it through the cloud it's there... Interesting.

Re: Unifi SDN Controller vs. Unifi (version) Controller

Software Defined Networking— except that Ubiquti neither makes any white-box hardware nor do their controllers support OpenFlow, Packetfence, etc., so my interpretation of UBNT's interpretation of SDN is that it's referring to a unified web-based control plane for an organization's Ubiquiti gear... and not much else yet.

Re: Unifi SDN Controller vs. Unifi (version) Controller

I am confused too. Good products but Ubiquiti doesn't document well. This still isnt clear to me. I am running Unifi 5.10.21 and just purchased the new Cloud Key G2P. Do I have to switch to Unifi SDN 5.6.40 (dated 9/2018?) before I install and migrate?

Re: Unifi SDN Controller vs. Unifi (version) Controller

Hello @jimww333,

What do you mean exactly?

You can import a 5.6.40 backup in the 5.10.21 controllers.

Re: Unifi SDN Controller vs. Unifi (version) Controller

Which software should I download? Network Controller or SDN Controller? I am guessing Network Controller because the version and date are much recent but the Ubiquiti docs keep referencing "SDN".

I will just plow thru it and hope Lady Luck is on my side.

Re: Unifi SDN Controller vs. Unifi (version) Controller

Hello @jimww333,

The UniFi Network Controller and UniFi SDN Controller are the same thing, it just got a different name overtime.

It's now called the UniFi Network Controller, currently the latest version is 5.10.21
