Upgrading old UAP

We recently took over IT at a small business.  They have a UniFi AP LR that is running on pretty old firmware - 3.2.6.2799.  No one there had the credentials for the controller.  I reset the AP to factory defaults.  I am able to adopt the AP but in the controller it says that it has to upgrade the firmware.  However, the firmware upgrade never goes through.  I can ping the AP from a Windows command prompt.  I can use WinSCP terminal and ping 8.8.8.8 without a problem.  I can even make the connection to Putty via WinSCP and ping 8.8.8.8 from there as well.

Is it even possible to upgrade this AP from such an old firmware to the newest version?  I've tried using WinSCP to put different firmware software in the tmp folder but I always get the "Invalid Firmware" error.  Am I missing something here?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Upgrading old UAP

Could you be specific about which firmware you tried? "Invalid Firmware" could mean you got the wrong stuff for your UAP-LR.

https://dl.ubnt.com/unifi/firmware/BZ2/4.0.15.9872/BZ.ar7240.v4.0.15.9872.181229.0259.bin

is the file you want for UAP-LR
Set a Frequency! Don't leave it on Auto!
Disable Uplink Connectivity Monitor
Always set-inform a Second time after Adopting

Re: Upgrading old UAP

DOH!  I really should try that whole "reading" thing.  FW version was the issue flipper.  I guess I should have paid closer to the Maintenance section where it said: 4.0.15.9872.  As soon as I downloaded the FW you linked to and copied it to the tmp folder the AP upgraded.  Thanks for steering me in the right direction flipper.

Re: Upgrading old UAP

@ankor - Have you tried WinSCP to transfer the FW to the tmp folder of the AP?  I followed flipper's suggestion from another thread and went here.

Basically, I downloaded the firmware, changed the name of the file to fwupdate.bin, copied that file to the tmp folder of the AP via WinSCP and as soon as that file was there the AP upgraded.  Didn't even have to run the command.  Give it a try.

I tried, the point became "disconnect".

Discovering utility also does not see them. ((((

Hello @ankor,

What model UAP did you have?

Are you able to SSH into the UAP?

Hello @ankor,

Run the commands below to fully upgrade the UAP.

You have to run these commands in a SSH session.

3.9.54

curl http://dl.ubnt.com/unifi/firmware/BZ2/3.9.54.9373/BZ.ar7240.v3.9.54.9373.180913.2356.bin -o /tmp/fwupdate.bin
syswrapper.sh upgrade2 &

or

wget https=://dl.ubnt.com/unifi/firmware/BZ2/3.9.54.9373/BZ.ar7240.v3.9.54.9373.180913.2356.bin -O /tmp/fwupdate.bin
syswrapper.sh upgrade2 &

4.0.30

curl https://dl.ui.com/unifi/firmware/BZ2/4.0.30.10217/BZ.ar7240.v4.0.30.10217.190402.2213.bin -o /tmp/fwupdate.bin
syswrapper.sh upgrade2 &

or

wget https://dl.ui.com/unifi/firmware/BZ2/4.0.30.10217/BZ.ar7240.v4.0.30.10217.190402.2213.bin -O /tmp/fwupdate.bin
syswrapper.sh upgrade2 &

Only use the commands above for the following UAPs: UAP, UAP-LR, UAP-OD, UAP-OD5

Re: Upgrading old UAP

[ Edited ]

Hello @ankor,

Commands work fine, the UAP just can't reach out to dl.ubnt.com....

Manually download the firmware onto your PC, and copy the firmware to the /tmp/ directory. ( use SFTP for this )

Rename the firmware to fwupdate.bin

Than run the command below.

syswrapper.sh upgrade2 &

You can also configure a static IP on the UAP and use google DNS as DNS servers.

Devices > UAP > Config > Network

You can also try caching the firmware on the controller and upgrade via the controller.

Settings > Maintenance > Firmware

Re: Upgrading old UAP

I tried it all (( otherwise i wouldn't write here.

If  "Manually download the firmware onto your PC, and copy the firmware to the /tmp/ directory"

login as: admin
admin@192.168.11.15's password:

BusyBox v1.11.2 (2017-06-09 07:50:19 PDT) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

BZ.v3.8.3# syswrapper.sh upgrade2 &
BZ.v3.8.3# + exec

and UAP goes offline before rebooting

Re: Upgrading old UAP

Hello @ankor,

Did you already try the caching in the controller?

Did the UAP come back with newer firmware?

Re: Upgrading old UAP

i would sincerely appreciate if you can point me in the right direction.

i previously had competent iT friend who installed several UAP-AC for me.

I suspect each are in need of Firmware Upgrade plus i would like to add a fourth unit, namely the Outdoor unit.

current version 3.1.13.2598.

i would appreciate any input/guidance familiarizing me with how to upgrade.

thank you.
