WiFi speed

[ Edited ]

System... UniFi USG router with a Cloudkey, UniFi 8 port POE switch 60W,  and two UniFi AP AC Lite access points.

Question... I just got a free upgrade to 400 Mbps service from my wireless provider. After the technician installed the service, he connected his test equipment to my router and got close to 500Mbps download speed and 24 Mbps up. With my iMac hardwired to the USG router, I get download speeds around 450 to 460 Mbps. However when I switch the iMac to wireless, I can only get around 250 to 260 Mbps, and those same speeds when using my iPhone XS Max and my iPad Pro. I was running Speedtest wile connected at 5G, not 2.4. What is likely limiting my WiFi speed versus my direct connection speed?

Signal strength

Distance

Capability of the client (laptop, phone, etc.)

Interference (did you scan and select clean channels?)

Router/firewall misconfiguration

Wifi is wifi, there are lots of factors that can cause you to not get "advertised" speeds.

Can you please post a screenshot of this page?

Hello @Belizaire,

Could you share your system config?

Settings > Maintenance > Support Info > Show System Config

Have you tried VHT80?

I recommend disabling the Uplink Connectivity Monitor if you don't use wireless uplinks

Settings > Site > Uplink Connectivity Monitor

I also recommend the following Radio Settings

Devices > UAP > Config > Radios

2.4 GHz
Channel width: HT20
Chanel: 1/6/11 | Choose one of these channels, a RF scan will help you choose the most clean one.
Transmit Power: Low/Medium

5GHz
Channel width: VHT40 | Optional VHT80 might decrease wireless stability
Chanel: 36/44 | Optional (149/157) Choose one of these channels, a RF scan will help you choose the most clean one. Avoid using DFS Channels
Transmit Power: Medium/High

Regards,

Glenn R.

Re: WiFi speed

Hi,

Turn off Connectivity monitor since you have both of your AP's hard wired.
Change the 5ghz power to "high" and the 2.4 power to "low" on both AP's.
Also change the VHT40 to VHT80 for both AP's. This will give more speeds to the devices.

Do another speed test and see if that helps.

Re: WiFi speed

Hello @Belizaire,

You haven't used any of my recommendations above... Please apply these and post a updated system config with new throughput results.

Re: WiFi speed

Just in case you have not figured it out yet... I am a novice at this stuff. How do I do an RF scan?

Re: WiFi speed

AmazedMender16... I made those changes and attached new sys confi.  I see no increase in wifi speed after those changes, using Ookla  SppedTest, either on iMac or iOS devices.

Re: WiFi speed

Hey @Belizaire with the 5g band on VHT40, you will never get faster than what you get now. Please change those to VHT80 on both AP's and see if that makes the speed tests faster.

Re: WiFi speed

OK... changed VHT80 on both APs. One provisioned quickly and the other took forever to provision and then failed. Rebooted everything and now both APs show VHT80 on 5G radio BUT now... I have wifi but USG router status is "adoption failed"

Re: WiFi speed

,,,and even with USG router status "adoption failed" I am now getting download speeds of 475Mbps on both iMac and iPhone!

Re: WiFi speed

Hello @Belizaire,

You can ignore that USG alert.

Does the USG still showup as disconnected?

I said in my recommendations that you could try VHT80... Also don’t use the same channels on each UAP, use different ones on each UAP.

Glenn R.

OK... I now have one UAP on channels 1 and 36... the other is on channels 6 and 44. The USG router status is still in "adoption failed" status with a white light on top rather than the usual blue light.

Re: WiFi speed

Hello @Belizaire,

Forget the USG in the controller and reset the unit by holding the reset button for 10 seconds, than readopt it to the controller.

Re: WiFi speed

"readopt it to the controller"   How exactly do I do that after it reboots?

I really appreciate your help on this Glenn!
