mapping location - unifi controller

i'm thinking of using the map function in unifi controller to map my property and to pinpoint any WIFI dead spots and/or areas for coverage improvement.

if i was to draw a plan of the property, what scale should i be using? and what format should i be saving it as so that unifi controller can use it?

i'll then look at adding the unifi equipment on top of it, i assume i can see see what my coverage is like?

Re: mapping location - unifi controller

Hello @chenks76,

You can manually set the scale in the controller.

You can just simply save it as a PNG file.

The MAP function will give you an indication, best thing to do is a wireless survey

Re: mapping location - unifi controller

ok i'll look at measuring everything and then draw a scale map.
the problem i am having is that the building is an old 1920s solid brick wall building. solid brick external and internal walls.
the location of my existing AP-Lite just about manages to cover most areas but some are pretty weak and drop off very quickly.
the location of the AP at the moment is in one of the outer corners of the building (due to current cabling and router location). once i can find some suitable white cat5e/6 cable at a length that i need (that also can hangle PoE/solid copper etc) then i look at moving it to a more central location.

i am guessing i'll also need to tweak the power levels and channels too.
previously everything was on auto and it all worked great, but the previous location was just plasterboard/stud walls so didn't cause much of a signal block.

Re: mapping location - unifi controller

Hello @chenks76,

If you can run a wireless survey, so you know where the signal drops.

I recommend these Radio Settings.

2.4 GHz
Channel width: HT20
Chanel: 1/6/11 | Choose one of these channels, a RF scan will help you choose the most clean one.
Transmit Power: Low/Medium

5GHz
Channel width: VHT40 | Optional VHT80 might decrease wireless stability
Chanel: 36/44 | Optional (149/157) Choose one of these channels, a RF scan will help you choose the most clean one. Avoid using DFS Channels
Transmit Power: Medium/High

[ Edited ]

currently mine is set to

2.4Ghz
Width : HT20
Channel : Auto
Power : Auto

5Ghz
Width : VHT80
Channel : 60 (DFS)
Power : Auto

why avoid DFS channels?

Hello @chenks76,

Your UAP will stop broadcasting if it gets a radar alert.

Re: mapping location - unifi controller

surely then general public would never be using any channels that the military or ATC would be using.
pretty sure that isn't possible in the UK?

Hello @chenks76,

You can use the DFS channels... Just if it drops you know why it drops..

Re: mapping location - unifi controller

you've said Low/Medium for 2.GHz and Medium/High for 5Ghz.
obviously can only select one of each.
i assume the higher the better? or is that not the case?

ie i'm guessing you woulnd't want Low for 2.4 and High for 5 as that leaves a middle ground gap?

Re: mapping location - unifi controller

Hello @chenks76,

I use LOW on 2.4GHz and Medium on 5GHz.

HIGH is not always the best solution.

Re: mapping location - unifi controller

obviously it will depend on local environment though?
with my 6 inch brick walls internally it's always going to be tricky

i tried your recommended settings as a test, and it made things much worse.

the furthest away points that had fair/marginal connection turned into almost non-existant connections.

i reverted back to auto and it returned back to how they were previously.
