AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

Hi Everyone!

We've been working with AF links over 1 year already, upgrading from AF5X to AF5X-HD. The capacity boost is great, and now we are getting 411Mbps / 135 Mbps capacity on 1.5 miles with AF-5G34-S45 dish.

This update was done 2 months ago, and its been already 1 month that our master AF keeps randomly rebooting (2-3 times x day) with no error msg. What we've done already:

  1. Changed POE
  2. Added POE on MGMT port (redundant power, works great BTW)
  3. Changed FTP Cable
  4. Changed FW to latest V1.1.1 stable
  5. Changed Frecuency (today)
  6. Disabled GPS Sync (today)

For now no new reboots will wait 24 hours to see results.

The only LOG with errors on Master side is:

Failed to create the persistent directory for /usr/lib/snmp//infctld.conf

This seems to be a bug since pretty sure no Linux command can contain //

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

Could you send the support file from this unit to nick.mcgee@ubnt.com as soon as you notice this issue again?

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

Hi Guys,

Sure, you will get an emai from sergio@musurit.com with support file (last reboot 16 hours ago)

UPDATES:

  1. Changed POE -> NOT HELPED
  2. Added POE on MGMT port (redundant power, works great BTW)  -> NOT HELPED
  3. Changed FTP Cable  -> NOT HELPED
  4. Changed FW to latest V1.1.1 stable  -> NOT HELPED
  5. Changed Frecuency (today)  -> NOT HELPED
  6. Disabled GPS Sync (today)  -> NOT HELPED
  7. All settings in the AF Master are in AUTO, on MANUAL same results
  8. Spoke with a friend CTO regarding this (another local ISP) that recommended me the HD model, seems that he is having the same issue of random reboots

Below you can see that it did work great for a period of time, this wasn't from the beginnging issue.

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

With a link that short, you should have your TX power turned way down. You also don't have the expected signal with the dishes that you are using at this distance.

Can you set the EIRP to 39 on both sides of the link and also try realigning?

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

Sure will do... but the unexpected reboots are related?

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

After setting EIRP from AUTO to 39 db the capacity dropped to  137 Mbps / 45 Mbps

Also the alignment isn't soooo bad:

As I said before, the AF worked for 1 month also with no issues

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

The unexpected reboots could be related to the signal levels, so I'd like to get that sorted first.

Are you sure that you are using 34dB antennas on this link? If so, with a 39dB EIRP configured, you should expect much closer to a -42dB signal.

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

Yes, pretty sure, those are pretty hard to mistake...

DSC_0006_2.JPGIMG-20171204-WA0038.jpeg

I really can't say I'm 100% sure, since I dont work @ubnt , BUT... These antennas were used with the AF 5X with no issues whatsoever. Also, IF and this was a signal related matter, BOTH - master and slave - should have these issues AND this issue would pop-up at the start, not 1 month after of normal usage and with no log entry that could validate this behaviour.

Sorry for being sceptical but I'm pretty sure I think we need to look at this issue from another point, any other sugestions (firmware? what about the log error ", I've sent you?)

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

There are several threads related to instability at 80 and 100 MHz channel width when using any duty cycle other than 50/50.  I would suggest trying 60 MHz at 75 / 25 duty cycle.

That said, we have an AF-5XHD link at -42 doing 176 / 535 megabit at 60 MHz.  Speeds should be better.

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

Hi @benvanderjagt!

Thanks for your reply, however the main problem is RANDOM REBOOT without any explanation, not that the link gets disconnected. The connectivity is great and stable, so using common scense for any carrier class equipment - its OK to loose link since the radio spectrum isnt completely clean, its ok to ALARM and ALERT regarding any connectivity issue, although is NOT OK to reboot the whole system just becase the channel width isnt correct (or smth).

The previous version of AF 5X worked for MONTHS with no reboot, no issues, 100% stable. Also as stated before, the link worked GREAT for amost one month.

So, lets suppose that the problem really is the chan. width, don't you think it should be good to know that this will be the expected behaviuour BEFORE buying the equipment?

I'm (still) hopefull Ubiquity tech support will figure this out =)

[ Edited ]

I understand that.  That's exactly what a lot of people are having happen.  One side simply reboots with no message.  Signal is great.  I'd try pulling back to 60 MHz channel width until their next beta which is supposed to address this bug.

Thanks for that advice. Will test tomorrow once traffic is lower, to see how it goes =)

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

I can confirm that it's software bug where running 80/100MHz channel width one side of link randomly reboots under load. This problem will be addressed in the upcoming v1.1.2-BETA release later this month. For now, please use 60MHz bw as it shouldn't be affected.

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

We are also improving system troubleshooting, so even in reboot situation like this with v1.1.2 we get more system info (general crash report).

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

Great, thanks everyone, 1 hour ago we've set the link to 60 Mhz.

We'll update in 24 hours if this solved the problem

Re: AirFiber 5X HD random reboots

24 hours monitoring resuts for 60 Mhz config:

  • Less (yet existing) reboots

Will update in 72 hours. Thanks for everyone's help.

Hi sergiomusurit,

Would you agree to test trial FW image we think we have fixed reboot issue, or want to wait for v1.1.2-BETA official?

Thanks!

Rasa hi, thanks for your answer. Yes, we agree to test trial de FW. I'm already in contact by DM with @jeromefc so we can figure it out. Pasting below the results for 60 Mhz config:

CONFIG to 60Mhz 08-Aug

Random reboots since (5 days): 10 times

Pretty bad, but better than on 80 Mhz
