Invalid Firmware file is uploaded AirRouter

I ran into this last night while viewing a customers router remotely. They were complaining thta no secire sites would open up due to bad certificates. I could reboot the router and they wouldbe OK for a few hours. I am unable to upgrade the router via GUI as it keeps bouncing me to the main page. What is the best way to clean this then upgrade firmware?

It's also most likelly malware infection. Was it device on public IP and weak login password? You may be required to do TFTP recovery to restore it's functionality.

P.S. Was it previously running on v6.0.4 or maybe that also was unexpected upgrade to this version?

Re: Invalid Firmware file is uploaded AirRouter

Indeed XM series. tried to go up then down, befroe and after a reboot with no dice. Got an error 500 message attached here. I had another businsess user this week with something similar with their router. Their windows PCs could ping internet addresses but could browse none. Their phones and tablet had no issues. They did not receive cert errors here, like this one in questions

Re: Invalid Firmware file is uploaded AirRouter

So im sure it was open remotely to the world. We believe with both of these that the router was installed with older firmware and was never upgraded by us, so it was more automatic. Can you direct me to the correct ftp procedure? I have a few for other issues in the past. I assume since i can access these devices remotely that i should be able to fix remotely as well?

No.  TFTP requires that you connect locally.  Press and hold the reset button, then power on.

Re: Invalid Firmware file is uploaded AirRouter

Hi,

Since Saturday I have the same problem on several devices with firmware xw 6.0.4 and xm 6.0.4

I can not log in via ssh - connection refused.

In logs I have:

Sep 26 14:37:36 init: can't run '/bin/dropbear': No such file or directory
Sep 26 14:37:37 init: process '/bin/dropbear -F -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_dss_host_key -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_rsa_host_key -p 22 ' (pid 3229
Sep 26 14:37:37 init: Run: /bin/dropbear -F -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_dss_host_key -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_rsa_host_key -p 22
Sep 26 14:37:37 init: starting pid 3234, tty '/dev/null': '/bin/dropbear -F -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_dss_host_key -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_rs
Sep 26 14:37:37 init: can't run '/bin/dropbear': No such file or directory
Sep 26 14:37:38 init: process '/bin/dropbear -F -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_dss_host_key -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_rsa_host_key -p 22 ' (pid 3234
Sep 26 14:37:38 init: Run: /bin/dropbear -F -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_dss_host_key -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_rsa_host_key -p 22
Sep 26 14:37:38 init: starting pid 3242, tty '/dev/null': '/bin/dropbear -F -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_dss_host_key -r /etc/persistent/dropbear_rs

It's malware infection?

I have not tried yet do TFTP recovery.

Any idea what to do?

Re: Invalid Firmware file is uploaded AirRouter

@Urs_ak  Please TFTP the latest firmware to this unit and reset the password to something 10+ characters long.  If you don't need remote access, please disable as well or restrict via firewall.

Re: Invalid Firmware file is uploaded AirRouter

You can restrict access via source IP with THESE steps on the radios Network work tab.  If all of your stations go through a router, you could also block access to the management interfaces at the edge of your network.
