Rocket M2 / Airmax Omni Antenna and Litebeam AC for ptmp network.

Hello,

 

I am in the middle of setting up a Rocket M2 AC with a Airmax Omni Antenna as the access point. 

I have a Litebeam ACs in station mode I will be adding another at some point across the street (maybe 20 foot away). 

 

I am having some VOIP issues. It seems if the traffic is idle voip is working fine, but if there is traffic (speedtest.net for example) on the network voip gets really laggy and noisey.

 

Currently, I have it all set to automaticall to see if it would help even though it has decreased my bandwidth.

 

I have user traffic and phone traffic sperated into vlans with a mtu of 1500 on each. 

 

Does anybody have any ideals?

 

I have thought about adding a pair of nano stations, just to handle voip possibly, would this be a good solution or is there something I can change that will allow for voip and data to flow better?.

Which antenna? The 10db or 13db?

 

You would have been better off with 2 x PtP's with more directional antennas rather than an omni in a multipoint scenario. Also with a PtMP all the traffic goes through the AP.

You say that you are running a Rocket M2 AC with a Airmax Omni Antenna as the access point. An interesting model that I haven't heard of Smiley Surprised

 

The down side of using high gain omnis is that they receive signal both wanted and unwanted noise from 360 degrees of the compass. Which actual omni are you using. You may well be better off using a more directional device than your current choice.

Do a frequency scan and see if you can find a quiet channel. Although your levels are quite strong your CINR could be made better. -32db and above are considered good.

What traffic other than VoIP are you using?

I went with the omni because the second location is in the oposite direction of the first location.

 

I am already using the queitest channel I could find per the unifi software.

 

It will be voip, and mainly http. I have setup a domian controller, and file server at the remote sites to reduce bandwidth usage.

 

I suppose I could use some spare rockets or a airfibre or 4, and setup several ptp networks after erecting a few small towers. It will be rather bulky, and time consuming though..

I have the 13db.

 

 

I have some airfibre 5XHD that I could use to setup several multi point to points. I was planning on using them on a different project, but do you have a atenna that will work with them in mind and I will see if I can pick them up and run the wiring next week?

Okay, I have removed the omni direction rocket, and changed it to a nanostation 5ac. I have tweaked the channels as much as 
I possibly can. I am going to realign the Local sometime today. 

 

While the stats have improved I am still getting some static and delay when a phone is in use.

 

My biggest question is should I keep the current access point, or should I switch to another nano staion? Which will provide a better quality service?

If you are still having VoIP issues then look to see what other traffic you have that is utilising the network.If there is too much other data traffic that can be swamping it.

I was able to fix it by doing what you suggested and setting up several ptps instead of a ptmp. I will mark as answer just havent been able to get back on the fourm since the fix.

 

I would like to understand why that works as opposed to the ptp it would have much more convient to do ptmp in my case, but it is what it is. I will probaly upgrade to a airfiber 5xhd (I think that is the model I have in stock, just need to find a good ptp antenna for them) for better throughput at some point. If voip can't work well with ptmp what would be the purpose of it in a business class network, is it only good for sharing a internet connection?

 

Thank you for all the help, I greatly appreciate it. Saved my department about $420/month on a fiber connection x 2 (maybe x 3 in the near future).

The problem with using PtMP is that all the traffic from the outlying Stations has to go through the AP regardless of whether it is an omni or directional antenna.

I saw this again only the other day on a CCTV installation I was called out to where the CCTV installer had installed an omni on his AP at centre point connecting to multiple Stations at various outlying buildings. We solved his issue with the creation of 2 x PtMPs, such was the layout of the site.
