Re: iwpriv to make 2x2 devices work like 1x1

Such a simple upgrade to airOS.  Such flexibility it would offer us.  I'm in utter disbelief that it hasn't been implemented by now.  Seriously, development team...let's make it happen.

No: Ubiquiti does not need to 'add the
ability to disable' a chain. Dave

Sorry but this is BS !

Than according to your logic, the faulty Titanium Series which has 1 chain dead, should work without any problems but this is not the case at all.

Yesterday I had an Mikrotik SXT with  -57/-75 RSSI on Chain0 and Chain1. I could barely push 6mbit out of this PtP link.

So I have disabled the chain1 from Winbox and I got 25mbit/s throuhput. Link normalized.

Re: iwpriv to make 2x2 devices work like 1x1

Hi I am trying to get a rocket m2 to do hpol only. I am just testing... so I ssh into it and type these for commands with "1" for hpol?
How do you apply the 4 commands?

Thanks

Re: iwpriv to make 2x2 devices work like 1x1

FYI in /tmp/system.cfg (configuration file):

radio.1.txchainmask=[bit mask]
radio.1.rxchainmask=[bit mask]

Where bit mask means which chain/chains to enable:

1(0bit) - chain0

2(1bit) - chain1

4(2bit) - chain2

So you can make combinations like 1 and 4 = 5, means chain0 and chain2 enabled. And so on.

NOTE: Chains are HW specif, not all have all chains or the same chains.

I guess my sample will help to make live easier and avoid custom scripts to be installed.

Thank you Keba.  How do I get the changes in to the /tmp/system.cfg file?

Re: iwpriv to make 2x2 devices work like 1x1

I just downloaded the cfg file and edited it in word. Just added the two lines, saved and then uploaded the cfg.Is it ok to do it this way?

As for the results:

My Rocket m2 MIMO Sector AP is what I am testing this on. The AP was a bullet M2 until last week when I replaced it with a rocket m2 and mimo sector.

My CPE's (all single chain bullet m2's)only associated to the rocket AP when I did:

radio.1.txchainmask=1

radio.1.rxchainmask=1

=2 and =4 didn't work. No CPE's associated.

This is a rocket mimo sector that only has Hpol CPE's connected to it.... so I'm only trying to get the hpol chain at this time.

So I guess my rocket AP, chain0 is horizontal. To make it mimo again, I guess I would just delete these two lines from the cfg file and reupload it...?

Thanks!

Re: iwpriv to make 2x2 devices work like 1x1

That should work.   I've never edited it in Windoze, though, but I'd imagine UBNT has sorted out the whole CR/LF thing...

Re: iwpriv to make 2x2 devices work like 1x1

Sweet. I think we have a winner.

I am also a huge fan of using the config file (especially if you are doing this on CPE's remotely). Because you can use the test feature instead of the 'apply changes and hope for the best'.

I have quite a few M2 and M5 nanobridges that I want to do this to. They associate to single chain AP's.

Thanks!

You can also use vi to edit directly on the device.

Once the file is updated, you can run

# save && reboot

And configuration will be applied.

Re: iwpriv to make 2x2 devices work like 1x1

[ Edited ]

FYI I've tested this on several NanoBridge M2's and M5 that connect to single chain H-pol Sector APs.

They got great performance before and after, so I don't really see any benefit to doing this in my situation... with the exception of a little better received signal.

Example:

A M2 CPE was getting -82 vpol/-61 hpol and got 37mbps rx and tx on the built in speedtests. The tower bullet m2 (hpol) AP heard it at -70.

After setting the rx and tx chain at hpol only on the CPE, it still got 37mbps using the built in speedtest. Signal jumped a bit at the CPE to -59, but the AP heard it at -75 now.

So I then told the CPE to still recieve only the hpol chain, but tx on both chains. Doing this still gave me the great 37mbps speed results, and it brought the tx power back up to -70 at the tower.

So in the end, I figured I'd leave the chain settings at default on my 2x2 CPE's and focus my efforts on swapping out bullets at towers for mimo rocket sectors Man Happy

Re: iwpriv to make 2x2 devices work like 1x1

[ Edited ]

I take it back. I have a 5.8ghz bullet m5 Hpol Sector with several m5 nanobridges. Several of them have one chain in the low 70's and of course the vertical chain is high 80's/nonexistant.CCQ's on the CPEs were in the 80's.

I added the radio.1.rxchainmask=1 to all those CPE's and now they are a 2X1 device (recieve only the horizontal chian) and the CCQ's are all high 90's.

So it does help a bunch on CPE's with weak signals.

Re: iwpriv to make 2x2 devices work like 1x1

Of course it does. ;-)

I AM INCREDULOUS THAT UBNT CONTINUES TO IGNORE THE NEED TO SURFACE THIS IN THE UI DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT HAS BEEN A USER-REQUESTED FEATURE FOR SUCH A LONG TIME.

Yup. I'm shouting, City Boys.
