8 months into a startup WISP with UBNT Airmax AC
Reason for Installation
Decided to start my own WISP after being fed up of slow internet and no real prospects for improvement unless I did something myself. Started with 2x Fiber backhaul fed sites 5AC-90-HD Sectors with Rocket 5AC Prisms. (mostly Gen2) Edgepower Supplies with Dual PSUs in each and EdgePoint S16 Switches which are all fiber fed. (I'm running Mikrotik Routers )

Description

Back in 2016 , a few years after moving to a home with slow internet (1Mb/sec) I was fed up.
I had slow internet at home, at work and my parents were out in the countryside with slow internet.
Something had to be done.

From my house a large Telecoms tower was about 5 miles away and I had previously seen a few videos on youtube that wireless internet could now offer good performance at distance.

So from here I started my research. Products, prices, performance and I came to the conclusion that UBNT Airmax AC was the way to go and I can say I haven't looked back. I didn't want anything with ongoing per Subscriber licencing costs or Pay to Unlock features.

I will admit I was fortunate enough to start my wisp at a point where AC hardware was on the market and GPS sync was just being rolled out. (My WISP officially launched in Late August 2017) This allowed my to operate 18 APs from a single tower using the 5AC-90HD sectors where co-lo costs per antenna were also a factor. (while staying within the allocated UK spectrum)

Airmax AC allowed me to become the fastest provider in the area, able to deliver peak speeds of 160Mb/sec in Fixed Frame to customers 4-5miles away. My best link can pull 279Mb at 5 miles in Flex Mode. I operate from 2 Fiber fed towers and feed them from a DataCentre. (One site runs Sync and the other runs Flex)

Right now it's still just me running my WISP and I've put in a fair bit of work over the winter and managed to get over 200 customers on my network in 8 months with orders for more still coming in all the time. Thanks to AirControl 2 rolling out Firmware is a breeze and I now have UNMS monitoring key infrastructure like the sector APs.

I have attached a few photos of my WISP 'starter pack' hardware I selected Man Happy
I'm just about to add some prism stations and Horns into my network.

UBNT has some great community support and the software keeps getting better and more feature rich, so a great thanks to the teams at UBNT.

AirMax AC definitely Rocks and I can't wait for LTU PTMP!

Very impressive - nice use of the HD antennas to maximize tower real estate too.    And even with LTU coming out (which is amazing gear) don't discount keeping the AC gear going for the long term - not every customer will need the LTU radio's speeds or costs to be happy...

Thanks Jim, the speeds I can deliver are great for now and the next few years but I'm always looking ahead to make sure I can stay as competitive as possible.
It's great to be making a difference to rural areas with UBNT hardware.

Awesome story Jerry!  I'm glad to see those HDs working so well with those Prisms for you!  Congrats on reaching 200 subs, and knowing you, you'll get another few hundred by the end of the year!  Thanks for sharing this story, and keep up the good work.

Cheers Tony! Next stop 300 and then on to 500!

Great work Jerry

It's always great to watch a WISP grow from an initial telephone conversation to get to this stage where it's providing to the rural communities!

Excitring times ahead as you grow Man Happy

Thanks Kev, Appreciate your support!

I'm looking forward to see what UltraNetworks can become by the end of this year and where things are headed for next year!

This is impressive, very nicely setup and done!  I'm in the same boat of starting last year and being the primary tech, 200 in 8 months is no easy feat!  Keep up the good work, looking fantastic.
