Color Coordinating Patch Panels with UniFi Gears

by on ‎01-18-2019 01:03 AM

Originally I had the black patch panels with labels mounted in my rack. However, I really wanted to color-coordinate the patch panels with the UniFi metallic silver faceplates. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to find keystone patch panels in silver.

I also wanted to orient the RJ45 latch direction with the switch. That means I would have to mount the top patch panel upside down. With the numbers pre-painted to the panel, mounting it up-side-down looked strange.

I decided to spray paint the patch panels myself.

First I roughed up the panel with some sanding blocks, then cleaned the surface with nail polish remover.

Spray-painted in 30-40 quick passes, using Rust-Oleum Satin Nickle Metallic Spray Paint

I let the painted panels sat outside for 3-4 hours to let the VOC escape, then moved them into my oven.  I baked them at 170F for 4 hours.  Kept them inside the oven while the oven cooled down.  I then waited another two days for the paint to fully cure.

There is a slight color variation, but this is as close as it gets with what's available at big box stores.

Looks great!! Can I ask you where you coth the short patch cables from and which length they are?

My patch panels are messy right now due to the long cables. Maybe a fun idea as well to spray paint them after I made my switch to unifi!

Looks awesome! Am I the only one that is bothered by the Gen 2 Plus rackmount blue LED they didn't make to match the older ones?

That has been bothering me since day one.  I am going to crack it open and mess with the electronics one of these days.

What patch pannels are those?

Where are the labels?

Given the 1:1 nature of the patch panel ports to the switch, the labels are pretty redundant.

This is what I had originally, but it doesn't look good.  I am currently investigating some other solutions.

I can either print those on transparency slides or get a laser engraver.  Hmmm everyone needs a laser cutter/engraver.

In the picture, the patch panels seem darker, but in reality, they are lighter than Unifi gears.  It's the way panels sitting recessed by 2 mm.  I need to get some washers.

Great setup.

I see you have the ReadyNas 2304. I have a ReadyNas 2304 in my home setup as well.

Do you run the NAS with IEEE 802.3ad LACP for the two 1G network connections? If yes, what Hash Types setup do you use to interface with the Unifi switch?

Auto on 2304.  If I use any other settings WoL won't work.

Cool, so set the ReadyNas to:

And then set the switch to:

Actually my settings are:

READYNAS: IEEE 802.3ad LACP, Hash Type: Layer 3+4

Unifi Switch: "Switching" (no aggregate)

Any other setting combination prevents Wake on LAN from working.
