mFi sensors - can they use just plain POE without the mPort?

To use the mPort sensors like motion, is the mPort gateway necessary? Can the sensors just be plugged into the UniFi POE switch and controlled via the mFI controller software?

I just came across the mFi product line. It looks cool but I'm not sure how it's doing market wise with other variants around like HomeKit.

Yes you need it, works like a "bridge" between the sensor and the network.

Re: mFi sensors - can they use just plain POE without the mPort?

The mFi sensors are just analog devices. Although they use RJ45 ports, these ports are custom wired and not Ethernet ports. Connecting such a sensor directly to a PoE Ethernet switch will not work, and may damage the device. As stated, you'll need an mPort to use any mFi sensors. The mPort is the analog to digital sampler necessary to convert a sensor's analog signal to a digital format and expose it to the wider mFi network via normal PoE Ethernet.
