mFi uFind myKitty

From CNN, "SmartThings will let you run your world by smartphone"
money.cnn.com/2012/09/15/technology/startups/smartthings-kickstarter/index.html?hpt=hp_t3
He envisions apps for literally everything, allowing people to wire up their things "like you can install apps into your phone." Want to keep track of your kitty? Slap a presence sensor on her collar and track her location with the "Oh No, My Pet Is Loose!" SmartApp.

Re: mFi uFind myKitty

This is old skool. As of this afternoon I have my home mFi system wired up.
I can:
Remotely monitor the indoor and outdoor temperatures.
Get an alarm when our deep freezer breaks.
Open and close my garage door from my iPhone.
Have my garage door auto close if I forget to close it.
Turn on the furnace from my iPhone.
Turn on the furnace only if the desired temperature is greater than the outside temperature.
Get a text on my phone when someone rings the house doorbell.
And I'm just getting started!

Re: mFi uFind myKitty

in other words, we can become stupider and lazier than we already are.

I remember the days on the job site pre cell phone:

you planned a whole day's work and did it - no interaction with boss or supervisor was necessary.

Not any more.

Employees calling boss every 10 min. for instructions. Boss on the fone all day. Productivity half of what it used to be.

Whatever.

In my army days, the good officers didn't tell you how to do things, they just told you what they wanted for the end result.

Very old school. I had my doorbell intercom ring my carphone. In 1974.

This is how everything should be. But of course, theres bad people now who you have to make sure they do what they are supposed to do.

Oh well I guess.....

Now every job I sub-contract for, I have to call into the helpdesk so they give me simple instructions to do something I already know how to do, just so they know its done properly.

Carphone - Acronym of "never having to say can you hear me now".
Carphone - 200 Watts EIRP.
Carphone - Plug into a base station on 300 foot tower and open repeaters in three states.

Justin I wonder how quick a couple of guys from Texas and Kentucky could build up a couple of gbit+ microwave rings all over the US one state at a time.

Sometimes I sit down and drink a cold sam adams or throw back some bourbon and think about things like this.

Re: mFi uFind myKitty

I have to wonder how this compares to a simple Vera. The only reason devices would cost any less is if they do less or the cost is subsidized by the MRC for the service which will cost you more in the long run.
I already have all but the cat tracker as well; and I know I've read about an animal tracker in the past with a GPS collar and another with RFID triangulation.

I would like too have an alarm generate a sound from the PC running the system.
An add on sensor would be a sound sensor that can monitor sounds, yea !! And even better one that can play different tones from say a speaker or a buzzer on alarms.

Re: mFi uFind myKitty

I'll have to try this. But I think a small piezo buzzer hooked to the 12volt relay terminals would probably buzz.

I have a 12V piezo in my desk just for that!

My systems are rarely in a place where I'd hear them; sometimes in an isolated datacenter; sometimes in the cloud somewhere; sometimes in just a closet.

Re: mFi uFind myKitty

I don't know what he's using, but a relay hooked up to the interior button contacts should do the trick just fine.
