@Dave-D said in Unifi AP's won't work with new Cat 6 cable:

CCA... for PoE runs under 50ft. or so.

I've got some CCA marked "Cat6, 23awg" I bought off Amazon. Looked a little skinny, no crosstalk divider. When I measured the conductors they are in fact 28awg! It works for 24v passive PoE at 15ft only, 25ft NOPE, constant reboots (on a UAP-AC-LR). Using a UAP-AC-PRO with real/active PoE it works up to 150ft but not 200ft.

I would recommend a cloud key instead of running the controller software on "something".

Get a cloud key, plug it into the network (needs PoE otherwise you have to use a GOOD QUALITY cell phone charger with GOOD QUALITY MicroUSB cable to power it).

Once you have the cloud key plugged in I would use Chrome browser on a computer and install the Ubiquiti Device Discovery Tool and it should be able to find the cloud key and then adopt all the access points.

If you have any trouble I can connect into that computer remotely and get it all set up and working for you (no charge).

If it's going on the wall in the corner for sure the AC-HD. Point it towards the center of the room (or the center of where the users will be) and it'll work great.

@therufus said in Best way of connecting 2 unifi switches together:

Most standard domestic routers these days come with at least 2 ethernet ports which is why i thought it was a shame the the USG would only have just the one. Im happy to daisy chain the two switches, I wasnt sure if this would cause any issues that was all.

I believe with the new firmware and controller software you can make the VOIP port into a LAN port :)

I would still just run a cable from one switch to the other.

@MC0023 said in Auto Channel Decision Making Process Questions:

I was wondering how the APs pick channels when using the controller.

The AP's pick the absolute worst channel and power level and use that.

    Don't use auto anything.

Make sure your CAT6 cable is full copper, not CCA/copper coated aluminum. You can test it by shaving one of the bare conductors with a sharp knife, if it's silver underneath the copper it's CCA and WILL NOT work for passing passive 24v PoE reliably :(

Is the cable a reputable brand? What gauge? Should be 23awg or at the worst 24awg. Lots of cable manufactures are faking the wire gauge specs now too :(

    Not the solution ;)

I get a lot of false DFS hits on my access points so I always avoid DFS channels. Using 80mhz channel width that only leaves me with two channels to use (36 and 161). Auto channel always picks the worst one, always.

    Dear All,

Thanks for your feedback. One small question, with regards to EdgeOS / Unifi my understanding is that they both run VyOS and hence unifi is capable of the same features as EdgeOS provided you like CLI (no issue there - years of juniper, cisco and fortunate experience)

I am planning to go the unifi route most probably since I would like to test/demo a full unifi setup for SOHO offices., without having to sacrifice features (GUI is not a issue)

If you're familiar with the CLI there shouldn't by any issues with UniFi. They are updating the GUI all the time too to add more features into it like the EdgeOS GUI :)
